Description

Ray Bradbury, the undisputed Dean of American storytelling, dips his accomplished pen into the cryptic inkwell of noir and creates a stylish and slightly fantastical tale of mayhem and murder set among the shadows and the murky canals of Venice, California, in the early 1950s.Toiling away amid the looming palm trees and decaying bungalows, a struggling young writer (who bears a resemblance to the author) spins fantastic stories from his fertile imagination upon his clacking typewriter. Trying not to miss his girlfriend (away studying in Mexico), the nameless writer steadily crafts his literary effort–until strange things begin happening around him.Starting with a series of peculiar phone calls, the writer then finds clumps of seaweed on his doorstep. But as the incidents escalate, his friends fall victim to a series of mysterious “accidents”–some of them fatal. Aided by Elmo Crumley, a savvy, street-smart detective, and a reclusive actress of yesteryear with an intense hunger for life, the wordsmith sets out to find the connection between the bizarre events, and in doing so, uncovers the truth about his own creative abilities.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The book was not bad. Nothing so far beats his Martians Chronicles book, or the Dandelion Wine book. I keep hoping for one as good as the above. It was okay but I compare all his books by the above. Fast delivery as well

⭐It took a few pages for me to get into this story but it did all come together to be a great book. I’ve read a lot of Ray Bradbury writings and this one is excellent.

⭐This was a great story, and if you love Bradbury as I do, I think you will love this. It is his hard-boiled detective story like Dashiell Hammett, and it ,to me , has vintage Bradbury-isms: Venice Beach and a carnival type atmosphere, a writer, and crusty but good-hearted detective, and a faded movie star -whom I found lovely and charming- and a real murder. The dialogue is scintillating and poetic at times, and the characters are so interesting and likable. The mystery is not a supernatural one ; there is a real crime and a real killer, and it is a delight to see it unfold and it to be solved. Bradbury possess this witchcraft of making one feel nostalgic for a time one never even lived through.I met him once, and he was as kind as one would imagine and took a lot of time talking to a young fan. I will always remember that, and though I have had the chance to meet many authors, few were as gracious and good as Ray Bradbury.Folks, this is a good one. If you don’t fall in love with Constance Rattigan, well, check your pulse…

⭐Wonderful! Sleeve had a bit of negligible wear and tear, but I am so pleasantly surprised that the book is a first ed copy! What a steal.

⭐No matter what he writes Bradbury knows how to entertain. Don’t forget to read the other two books that go along with this one: A Graveyard For Lunatics, and Let’s All Kill Constance!

⭐This is exactly what I hoped it was. I haven’t done a lot of checking, but everything seems legitimate and awesome. I gave this as a gift to a good friend of mine so I can only really speak to how incredible the story itself is. Bradbury is an incredible story teller, Death is a Lonely Business is(to my knowledge) one of the only noir-esk stories that he ever wrote, and it’s absolutely fantastic. I highly recommend, even if you don’t get a collectors edition, that you read this story.

⭐This is Bradbury’s foray into the world of noir. And, typical to form, he stands it on it’s ear. This novel has all the lyrical quality that Bradbury is known for. And the plot is very good: well conceived and executed. It has some of Bradbury’s finest characters. It also manages to evoke a bygone era (post WWII), which is a masterful trait of Bradbury’s. While this book is a definite departure from his normal subject matter, it still maintains that unique magical quality found in all of his writing. This is a must read for Bradbury fans and for noir fans as well.

⭐Read the three novels completely backwards, however, given his extremely developed craft they were still greatly enjoyable in that order.

⭐As a novelist myself, I cannot help but feel hopelessly outgunned by the genius of Ray Bradbury’s poetical prose as it scorches across the page like chain lightning. I had previously read his sci-fi/horror novels, so I was interested to read a novel of his that didn’t involve point rocketships or Martians. This book is fabulous and features a “usual suspects” lineup of weird and quirky characters, all with the potential to be the murderer. Bradbury captures the sights and sounds of Venice California, a town that, like this novel, is very much of an age. Terrific stuff!

⭐Excellent book, It will take you away to a place that, although real, seems imaginary. Read it you’ll see what I mean. Downloaded with amazon’s usual quick service

⭐A joy to read from beginning to end

⭐Good read

⭐No spoilers!Maybe one of Ray Bradbury’s lesser known works, but a very enjoyable one. With Raymond Chandler and H.P. Lovecraft being two big names in my book shelf and me sporting a big love for the first Silent Hill games, this novel turned out to be a delightful read. It’s comfortably eerie, features a rich assortment of colourful characters in a weird and strange storyline that become easily accessibly through the good-natured and very likable main character that somehow stumbled into this mess. I can’t wait to pick up the next book in this trilogy. Wish I could keep on reading it for the first time over and over again!
