⭐I first read this book some decades ago and wasn’t impressed, but I decided recently to get another copy and re-read it. I find now it is a fine book, full of interesting details and insights which Fuller fans will probably appreciate.Interestingly the book was written during early WW2 while London was under attack, which created difficulties for the author.

⭐In this remarkably short work British General J.F.C. Fuller analyzes virtually every major battle in U.S. history from the Battle of Trenton in the American Revolution to thru the Meuse-Argonne offensive in World War I. Each chapter begins with a short synopsis of the political factors leading to the conflict followed by a detailed analysis of the strategy and tactics employed by the opposing commanders. In so doing the objectively reviews the information available and the thought processes leading to the actions or inactions taken and commends or criticizes the decisions as appropriate.Written in 1941 as World War II was just beginning this work serves as a manual for military strategists and tacticians even today. While the weapons have changed the principles of war are timeless. General Fuller shows how adhering to those principles have led to success, ignoring them inevitably leads to defeat. I gave the work only four stars because of the lack of and poor quality of the maps provided makes following the narration difficult unless the reader has an intimate knowledge of the geography of the area. However it is still a great read that is of great benefit to military strategists, tacticians and students of military history today.
