User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Well, not everything is here, but only a completest would want more. For example, there is a novella, Tom and Maggie Tolliver, with 13 short chapters, that is not included (this may be an exerpt of The Mill on the Floss, I’m not sure). No translations are included, nor letters. I believe some journaling is missing, and possibly some essays. That said, everything the publisher has listed is here: 1) All seven novels, including, Middlemarch, the Mill on the Floss, and Silas Marner. I believe all the major essays and poetry are here. But here are the 2 biggest selling points: The presentation of the the text itself is flawless with very minimal typing errors. Plus, every chapter is hyperlinked to the table of contents, which is set up in a most convenient manner. This is the very best of compilations for 2 bucks. It just doesn’t get any better than this.

⭐I think with such amazingly prolific 19th century authors, “complete” is always going to be a work in progress with e-collections. Unlike several other companies, however, Delphi Classics is extremely good about updating their author collections as they turn up more material. You don’t have to repurchase the updated versions, although Amazon does not yet have an easy way of re-uploading (you still have to contact them). I highly recommend this George Eliot collection for its orderly presentation of her works, its clean and easy to navigate layout and its use of introductions to individual works. The images are a much appreciated added bonus. Although it’s easy enough to gather her individual books for free, it’s wonderful to have these masterpieces all together in one place, presented with care and at a remarkably low price.

⭐George Eliot is a classic writer, and a bold woman to try to swim upstream in a man’s world. I have read “Adam Bede”, “The Mill on the Floss” and “Silas Marner,” [we called it “Silent Murder” in high school back in the 1960’s]. These old books paint a good portrait of people of the times, and their fears based so much on what other people think of them. There are some universal, timeless elements that can be extracted into our lives today, but mostly it’s good escape reading.

⭐George Eliot is a great author who repays careful reading. This edition is quite well proofread, for a smooth reading exprience.I must admit that some of her passages were a bit … long … for my taste, but the stories were all well worth reading.

⭐One of the greatest authors who ever contributed to English literature. This has all her classics. I have never seen modern novels with the depth of psychological insight in some of her novels, such as Middlemarch, Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Adam Bede, and Daniel Deronda. There might be one or two of the novels you want to skip.

⭐George Eliot’s writing is quite entertaining should your likes run toward the England of the 1700’s and wish to follow the adventures of communities or specific families for a period of time.

⭐You don’t really need to be an English major to like this.

⭐Rereading some of her writings aftermany years and found I like her style even more than I thought. She may be a knotch above Dickens. What a command of the language! She begs to beread and reread. Thank Heavens for my Kindle–I can take her anywhere.

⭐The complete works of George Eliot – not just the fiction but her essays too, indeed almost everything, including her translations from German of two books that revolutionised the study of the Bible and the origins of Christianity. The only thing I have noticed to be missing is her translation of Spinoza’s Ethics. And all this on Kindle costs just £1.49 – an amazing bargain.I have known the major novels for many years, but I have now read for the first time the early Scenes from Clerical Life. Any reader expecting something as cosy as the Barchester novels of her almost exact contemporary Anthony Trollope is in for a shock. The satire is much more savage, with sarcasm, caricatures and more than a little snobbery reminiscent of another contemporary, Charles Dickens. But it is combined with real tragedy, bleak and grim, with no Dickensian sentimentality to soften it.

⭐I tend to agree that it is difficult to navigate around the book. The table of contents lists the title of each book, followed by chapters 1 to N, but not saying which book each chapter is in. Since most of the main novels contain forty or fifty chapters (possibly more, I haven’t counted), the listing shown is pretty uninformative. I have so far used the search facility to get to the beginning of the book I wanted to read, but this is somewhat time-consuming. It would be much more helpful, I think, if the table of contents was nested – that is, it listed the books as main headings, with the possibility of expanding a more detailed list of chapters under each main title, if the reader wished to expand the display.I will now update the review, to say that there is a simple table of contents at location 2 in the book, which makes it easy to navigate. Accordingly, I will increase my rating to 4 stars, from the original 3.

⭐Do not buy the hardback edition – it is a con. I am sure the Kindle edition may be close to the complete works, but the hardback edition is actually a photocopy of only one of her books; in this case Adam Bede. The book is nicely bound, but as the description on the back notes, being a scan of a library book (there is a page with a scan of the glued in borrowing slip with return date!), it may have blurred pages, marks and stains or even missing pages. I already jad a copy of Adam Bede, so I have wasted £26. There is no indication of the real contents on the cover, so you are taking a gamble on which book will arrive. I was not naive enough to think one volume would include George Eliot’s entire literary output, but did think it would feature her major works, possibly in microprint format. I feel thoroughly ripped off.

⭐Delphi Complete Works’ is a great range of classics, and at less than £2, are almost given away for free. In Kindle form, they are a lot easier for me to read than on paper: no weight, so can carry it about, no book marker which always gets lost, and kindle screen has the advantage over the normal computer screen that it can be read in bright outdoors (in fact the brighter the better!). I have just one criticism of the kindle production: Most of the time one cannot tell which chapter one is reading, and how far one has progressed through the book. All kindle does is to show the percentage of text read, which is normally not a lot of use, but in the case of ‘Complete Works’ is completely useless as the figure is calculated in relation to the complete work rather than the book. Please Kindle, if you are listening, give us a status line like “Chapter X of Y; Page P of Q”

⭐I chose ‘Felix Holt The Radical’ for my first read from this collection. It is the only Eliot novel I have never read. The editing of this version is very poor; indeed in parts it is almost indecipherable. It looks to me as if it has not been properly edited at all before being published on line. Some of the punctuation, where the recognition software has not understood, makes gobbledygook of some chapters. The writing, as always, is erudite and brilliant. Please re-edit this and serve it up in a decent form.
