Description

“Bulgakov’s strong point was his ability to amplify the roots of man’s dementia, the howls of political pandemonium . . . a lively collection.” —The Washington Post Book World Mikhail Bulgakov’s Diaboliad and Other Stories, comprised of Diaboliad, No. 13–The Elpit Workers’ Commune, A Chinese Tale, and The Adventures of Chichikov, serves as an excellent introduction to this renowned Russian satirist and playwright’s work. Black comedy, biting social and political commentary, and Bulgakov’s unique narrative exuberance combine to tell the tales of labyrinthine post-Revolution bureaucracy; clashes between science, the intellectual class, and the state; and the high price to be paid for the promised utopian world of Communism in early Soviet Russia. Bulgakov’s signature eloquent skewering of the various shortcomings of the world around and within him can be found on every page, and horror and magic interweave in a constant dance of the absurd—a dance that would reach its highest point both stylistically and thematically in Bulgakov’s tour de force novel The Master and Margarita. “One of the most original voices of the twentieth century.” —The Guardian, UK

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The book was already badly dented as soon as I took it out of the package.

⭐i’m a big fan of Mikhail B. why this is no Master & Margarita nor is it Fatal Eggs or Heart of a Dog. It’s also not quite White Guard. It is however a good read.

⭐”My goodness, what are you saying,” Korotkov exclaimed in distress, sensing that here, too something strange was starting, just as it had everywhere else. He looked back as if he were being hunted, afraid that the shaven face and the bald shell would emerge from somewhere, and then he added in a clumsy way, “I’m very glad, yes, very . . .” A motley flush passed lightly over the marble man; raising Korotkov’s hand delicately, he drew him toward a little table, reiterating, “I’m very glad, too. But here’s the rub, imagine it – I don’t even have a place where you can sit down. We’re being kept in a pen in spite of our significance.” (Mikhail Bulgakov, Diaboliad p30)A brilliant blend of magical and realistic elements, grotesque situations, and major ethical issues. Its story lies between parable and reality; its tone varies from satire to unguarded vulnerability. Its publication represents the triumph of imagination over politics…

⭐Almost as good as his master piece the master and margarita ,great collection of short stories, wonderful characters in crazy situations

⭐Fabulous. I loved every second of reading this. It should be more widely read. This translation is very good.

⭐good

⭐Wonderful! Brilliant satire and such a comic yet real observation of life in Moscow in the early 20th Century. There is such a lot to learn and experience from reading literature of this quality.

⭐Fantastic thanks!
