Description
Aimed at undergraduate mathematics and computer science students, this book is an excellent introduction to a lot of problems of discrete mathematics. It discusses a number of selected results and methods, mostly from areas of combinatorics and graph theory, and it uses proofs and problem solving to help students understand the solutions to problems. Numerous examples, figures, and exercises are spread throughout the book.

⭐A decent book for an introduction to Discrete Mathematics. Presents the material in a conversational manner, which can be a little easier to understand than your typical mathematics textbook. I picked it up for an undergraduate class in Discrete Mathematics. However, some material is glossed over, and with only a few or single examples/problems. I would still recommend this book, but one should look at supplementing the text with other learning (as with any subject). In this case, YouTube has been extremely useful as a supplemental learning tool for me.
⭐It’s difficult to give this book an accurate rating. Certain portions of the book are excellent and well written while other sections will skim over a lot of information that I find important to the topic area. The review questions are answered in the back of the book but they are not explained well. At first glance, this book seems good, however if you take a glance at how other authors approach similar subject areas (Book of Proof by Richard Hammack) you will become more aware of the shortcomings of this book.
⭐I like this book. It’s much better than the discrete math book I used in college. It is written in a funny, conversational style, and seeks to develop intuition about the subject, while at the same time offering the necessary rigor. Some of the problems are difficult. I spent about 3 days on one before giving up and looking at the answer. The answer said: “The problem as stated is too difficult. The problem was supposed to be
⭐This is possibly the worst math book I have ever had the displeasure of being forced to read. The passages are garbage that explain nothing, and the questions make no sense and have nonsense answers in the back that might as well not be there at all. The passages have astoundingly poor explanation. My professor explains better in ten seconds what this book spends a page and a half trying to explain with unless piles of trash explanation. Its as if some discrete math expert wrote it, showed it to all his or her discrete math expert friends, and never bothered to see whether someone who had never been exposed to discrete math actually understood it at all. I would burn this book before I even finish my Discrete Math class if it wasn’t required that I do homework from it–problems I usually can’t even do because, again, the questions themselves make no sense. (As an aside, the “challenging” part of a word problem should not be how poorly worded it is). Thankfully our professor realizes how terrible the questions are and doesn’t grade us based on correct answers but on attempts. Half of my homework turned in just says, “I don’t understand what the book is asking me to do here.” If all of that wasn’t enough, the book doesn’t even bother itself with being correctly organized. It literally asks homework problems where, in the answer section, it refers you to a LATER CHAPTER YOU HAVEN’T READ YET that you have to have read to answer the problem. If I could give this book negative infinity stars, I would do it. It is that awful.
⭐In my mind this book is great for either teachers who want some neat examples for instruction, or for students who want a basic understanding. It would not be my choice as an instructional text. However, I can see where it could help a student who wanted a resource beyond a textbook. ( though that might be a stretch). There are exercises and answers. But do not look for any rigor or depth. ( don’t even bother reading the chapter on probability, it will just confuse learning it for real ).I believe the authors wanted broad coverage of topics, and to cover some things that are not part of some textbooks. Like it does give a pretty good view of Number theory. Yet probability is barely provided any depth worth reading. The title is elementary and beyond.. well it is more elementary than beyond.I take the book for what it is, and that is an intro, nothing more. There is alot to complain about with this book, it has value. From what I have seen of some textbooks of discrete math, this book actually has alot of value.Though I think it is a bit overpriced.
⭐This important work covers hundreds of beautiful and foundational ideas from combinatorics, graph theory, probability, number theory, cryptography, and complexity theory.
⭐An informative book on the various facets of Discrete Mathematics. The authors provide logic problems and examples that aid in the understanding of the thought processes behind the methods discussed (though they have a peculiar fixation with Western culture). Overall, this book is quite interesting.
⭐This was used for a class.
⭐
⭐Actually very a very good book , but it needs some supplement books like discrete mathematics and it’s application for instance
