    Description

Till about the Year of Grace 860 there were no kings in Norway, nothing but numerous jarls, – essentially kinglets, each presiding over a kind of republican or parliamentary little territory; generally striving each to be on some terms of human neighborhood with those about him, but, – in spite of “Fylke Things” (Folk Things, little parish parliaments), and small combinations of these, which had gradually formed themselves, – often reduced to the unhappy state of quarrel with them. Harald Haarfagr was the first to put an end to this state of things, and become memorable and profitable to his country by uniting it under one head and making a kingdom of it; which it has continued to be ever since…

    User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought this book to get more info on the Kings identified in my family lineage. This book matches the information I have regarding names, dates, wives and children but also adds colorful stories about their lives. It’s fun to read about the adventures and reputations about my ancestors.

⭐I thought the book has more information on all the Kings of Norway. I enjoy it and learn from past history. Thanks Y.Castilla

⭐For the history buff looking for accurate dates this is probably not for you. The author admits throughout the book the exact dates and in some cases the exact place is conjecture. Dates and places are still a reasonable time line though. The stories are very grippingly told, and you still learn a lot about the Norse. I found it worth reading.

⭐Still reading this book, but I have to say it is interesting. Would recommend it to those that are history buffs.

⭐If you have ancient ties to or merely an interest in early Norway, you will find this book interesting and informative.

    ⭐Interesting…

    ⭐Good

    ⭐Enjoying this book.

⭐This is an old-fashioned book, a little outdated (for example Oslo is called Christiana) but very vivid and wonderfully clear on both the geography and history of Norway and how the two interrelate. I loved it.

⭐Pense que eran historias nordicas ficticias y resultaron ser veridicas, aun mejor.Crei que era mas grande, pero esta bien.Bella edizione, in alcuni punti è un po’ complicato riuscire a non perdere il filo, ma forse parte della sua bellezza è anche il fatto che districarsi tra nomi e eventi ti fa assorbire di più nella storiaThis is not an easy to read narrative history. I know I should have realised this when I saw the name of the author. It is a book to dip into just to see what Carlyle has to say about certain people.I find it exasperating that Amazon mix up historical fiction with historical non fiction and with books such as this. They are really three separate categories.
