Description

A guide to primary sources that date from China’s early medieval period (late third through sixth centuries) and to later anthologies or reference works concerning them. Ninety-three essays, arranged alphabetically by title, discuss authorship, contents, history of editions, traditional commentaries and assessments, modern scholarship, and translations. Appendices include cross-references to alternate titles, common literary genres, frequently cited sources and collectanea, textual transmission of the standard histories, and non-Western periodical titles.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐The sixty contributors provide notes on 93 Six Dynasty (222-589 CE) transmitted textual sources (including a handful compiled after the period but vital for it). Each of the entries gives concise and accurate details of the nature of the text, its contents, transmission and editions, plus traditional and modern assessments and selective lists (often annotated) of secondary studies. The appendixes cover alternative titles, common literary genres, textual transmission of the standard histories for the period, and an index that divides the texts under 25 subject headings (the collected works of individuals are the single largest category (36 are included), followed by standard histories (13 are included). Sixty of the entries are also found in David Knechtges and Taiping Chang’s Ancient and early medieval Chinese literature: A reference guide (4 volumes, 2010–14), but those in EMCT are better organized, much more selective, and with critical assessments lacking in that larger work. EMCT does for the primary sources of the Six Dynasties what Michael Loewe’s Early Chinese texts (1993) did for Han and pre-Han texts and it does it with flair. Highly recommended for all serious students of Chinese history interested to learn about the variety of transmitted sources available for the history of this period of Chinese history.

⭐This is a unique ressource for the study of early medieval texts. Much like the predecessor “Early Chinese Texts : A Bibliographical Guide” by Michael Loewe this book adds information on editorial history, translations etc. for a large variety of texts from the period between Han and Song, And it has been updated to Hanyu Pinyin as romanization system.
