Description

His name is synonymous with “genius,” but these essays by the renowned physicist and scholar are accessible to any reader. In addition to outlining the core of relativity theory in everyday language, Albert Einstein presents fascinating discussions of other scientific fields to which he made significant contributions. The Nobel Laureate also profiles some of history’s most influential physicists, upon whose studies his own work was based.Assembled during Einstein’s lifetime from his speeches and essays, this book marks the first presentation to the wider world of the scientist’s accomplishments in the field of abstract physics. Along with relativity theory, these articles examine the methods of theoretical physics, principles of research, and the concept of scientific truth. Einstein’s speeches to audiences at Columbia University and the Prussian Academy of Science appear here, along with his insightful observations on such giants of science as Johannes Kepler, Sir Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Niels Bohr, Max Planck, and others.

⭐It is a very interesting and exciting book by one of the most famous scientist in the history. Einstein provided reader with two different type of essays. While the first one is more or less filosofical and focussed on underlying philosophy and methodology of exact science, the second one is purely educational. In the first group of articles, Einstein focuses especially on theory of relativity. He goes to roots what the space-time really is and how to comprehend it. Personally, I feel that these essays helped me to understand some aspect of theory of relativity more deeply. The second group of articles is educational one. Some are related to important historical characters of physics, like a Keppler, Maxwell and Bohr. Suprisingly, Einstein provides articles on practical applications of science as well. The Namelly, Flettner ship and reason why rivers create meanders.Overall, the book is worth reading for everybody interested in modern science and its history. Since the book contain only a little of mathematics, it can be understood by anyone who is familiar with basic concepts of physics on grammar school level.

⭐Albert Einstein is one of the greatest physicists mankind has ever seen, and he is also one the modest persons that ever lived. The papers and speeches published for the first time in this short volume is comprehensible to few people who are familiar with his work. They deal in part with laws of classical of physics, physical reality, concept of luminiferous ether, and evolution of relativistic & quantum physics. Most essays in this book are brief and summary of his philosophical ideas. Hence readers not familiar with basic laws of physics could be distracted by its conciseness, and inadequate translation from German to English. Nevertheless the wisdom of this genius may be understood though his thoughts. There are 16 essays in this short book, which include an address on the occasion of Max Planck’s 60th birthday at the physical society in Berlin, Inaugural address to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in 1914; James Clerk Maxwell’s influence in the understanding physical reality, Beer’s law, Flettner Ship, Johannes Kepler, Niels Bohr, and an address at the Columbia University, New York. One of the interesting pieces I found in this book was the view of this genius on luminous ether. “According to the general theory of relativity space is endowed with physical qualities; in this sense, therefore the ether exists. In accordance with general theory of relativity space without ether is inconceivable.” He goes on to state that the “ether must not be thought of as endowed with the properties characteristics of ponderable media …” Other interesting ideas include how physicists helped to understand physical reality, and the historical development of special theory of relativity. This book is highly recommended to everyone interested in fundamental laws of physics, and the life of Albert Einstein.1.

⭐I have the original 1934 hard-back edition of this book, which somehow came into my hands in the late 1960s. As a teenager, I found it quite interesting because I was interested in science. However, this book has really a fairly limited appeal. This Dover edition definitely has exactly the same essays, page for page, as the original 1934 edition which I have here. For physicists, it is of little value because there isn’t really any physics in this book. There are a couple of short overview essays, whereas Einstein did write some more substantial essays about physics in other books. There’s an odd essay (page 92) about “The Flettner ship”, which perplexed me when I first read it. It did not seem to me to be very practical. However, in the last few weeks, I saw in the news that Flettner ships are making a come-back. They’re using the rotating cylinders on long-haul cargo ships to reduce fuel costs. The essay “The problem of space, ether, and the field in physics” (page 61) contains some important points about ontology. The first 3 paragraphs of this essay are the best statement of the ontological problem in mathematics that I have ever seen.I think this book would be good for anyone who wants to avoid any real physics or mathematics. It does have some introductory essays on relativity which give a general idea of the subject. But there are better non-technical introductions to relativity elsewhere these days.

⭐I am in the middle of this book now, not finish to read yet. However, it is really good book to image what he thought. I like it.

⭐There is nothing like reading the words of the great man himself. His thoughts on gravity, relativity and the contributions of previous giants is worth reading and taking the time to understand.
