Description
Praise for Noise Reduction Techniques IN electronic systems”Henry Ott has literally ‘written the book’ on the subject of EMC. . . . He not only knows the subject, but has the rare ability to communicate that knowledge to others.” —EE TimesElectromagnetic Compatibility Engineering is a completely revised, expanded, and updated version of Henry Ott’s popular book Noise Reduction Techniques in Electronic Systems. It reflects the most recent developments in the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and noise reduction¿and their practical applications to the design of analog and digital circuits in computer, home entertainment, medical, telecom, industrial process control, and automotive equipment, as well as military and aerospace systems. While maintaining and updating the core information—such as cabling, grounding, filtering, shielding, digital circuit grounding and layout, and ESD—that made the previous book such a wide success, this new book includes additional coverage of:Equipment/systems groundingSwitching power supplies and variable-speed motor drivesDigital circuit power distribution and decouplingPCB layout and stack-upMixed-signal PCB layoutRF and transient immunityPower line disturbancesPrecompliance EMC measurementsNew appendices on dipole antennae, the theory of partial inductance, and the ten most common EMC problemsThe concepts presented are applicable to analog and digital circuits operating from below audio frequencies to those in the GHz range. Throughout the book, an emphasis is placed on cost-effective EMC designs, with the amount and complexity of mathematics kept to the strictest minimum.Complemented with over 250 problems with answers, Electromagnetic Compatibility Engineering equips readers with the knowledge needed to design electronic equipment that is compatible with the electromagnetic environment and compliant with national and international EMC regulations. It is an essential resource for practicing engineers who face EMC and regulatory compliance issues and an ideal textbook for EE courses at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is the only book that I recommend *if* you want to really understand Electro-Magnetic Compliance (EMC) with all the theory involved. It is *the* book that is required reading for those who want to pass the iNarte EMC Design Engineer certification. There are many, many sources of books on Signal Integrity (Howard Johnson), Power Integrity (Howard Johnson), Analog Design (Walter Jung), Digital Design, High Speed Design, PCB Design (Mark Montrose), EMC Compliance (Tim Williams), Power Conversion (Slobodan Cuk) and Electronics Design (Tim Williams); However none of them cover the topic so completely and entirely on the EMC subject as this Henry W Ott does. I highly recommend this book for those who wish to understand and solve very deep EMC problems as well as those who either wish to be an EMC Design Engineer or those simply want expert knowledge on the subject. I have over 32 years of experience in solving EMC issues and many of the trade secrets are discussed in this singular text.WARNING: The details of learning EMC design *do NOT* come quickly and those wanting quick answers will be lacking if using this as a quickie reference book. This book requires reading every chapter (all 18 chapters and 4 appendix’s) in entirety to gain full knowledge. This will take many weeks if not a few months to absorb all details before attempting EMC problem resolution. To do so otherwise is simply fool-hardy and spotty at best. – Steven Minichiello
⭐If I knew how to offer a better review than these other esteemed engineers, I would. I’m an electronics engineer in the rail road industry with about 35 years of experience in industrial control design, a senior member of the IEEE, and hold an iNARTE EMC Engineering certification. I’m still learning, and this is my favorite reference book. If your considering this book and it seems too costly, my advice would be not to be skimp on tools used in your career.
⭐EMC authority Henry Ott’s new book is out, and it’s a beauty. It’s nearly twice the size of his previous book. There’s lots of new material, including coverage of the Pin 1 problem (with credit to Neil Muncy) and SCIN. There’s also an excellent analysis of switch mode power supplies and variable frequency drive motor controllers, with specific recommendations for minimizing the massive noise they produce. Many of the earlier chapters have significant updates, and there are lots of other new topics, analog and digital designs and printed circuit board layout issues, as well as updated information on EMC regulations. A section on mains power focuses on North American practice. There’s also the very useful development of an equation for partial inductance — that is, the inductance of a conductor “in free space” that does not form a loop, which is then reconciled with equations for loops by applying the partial treatment to each element of the loop. This is quite helpful in understanding fundamental practical applications like the inductance of alength of wire in a grounding path. The only other place I’ve seen an equation to cover this problem is in Terman’s 1943 book. Ott’s and Terman’s equations are a bit different, but provide results that are within 5% of each other for practical problems. A friend recently reminded me that Clayton Paul’s excellent book also covers this concept. No surprise — Henry’s analysis is always spot on and his writing style easy to follow. He never “hides behind the math, but there’s enough to allow quantification of each principle being discussed. This book ought to be on the bookshelf of every EE, no matter the discipline.Jim BrownChair – Technical Committee on EMC, Audio Engineering Society (AES)Vice-Chair, AES Standards Committee Working Group on EMC
⭐All I can say is definitive. I have used the information on Ott’s website for about 5 years, and this volume is just an amazingly comprehensive expansion of his of practical industry know-how and experience. Not cheap, but for a professional engineering setting, it’s worth its weight in gold. Combined with Howard Johnson’s High Speed Digital Design, your designs can soar.
⭐This is the bible for EMC and bought it based on a recommendation. Glad I did. I’ve only given it a good cursory overview, but Mr. Ott’s ability to combine mathematical theory with the applied / practical side of the science is amazing. I find his writing style similar to my own so I find it extremely easy to read and comprehend.Combine this with a good text on Signal Integrity and you have one hell of a foundation for electrical engineering.
⭐This is one of a few books on Electromagnetic Compatibility that I would say are among the best.
⭐This is an absolutely fantastic resource for any electrical engineer, circuit designer, layout engineer, or EMC engineer. It lays out in detail and in very simple and easy to understand language how to design real products that need to pass FCC and CE regulations. It makes certain things that used to be mysterious crystal clear. Quite a comprehensive guide on all aspects of building real pcbs for EMC. A must have that belongs right alongside, “The Art of Electronics.”
⭐I’ve been working on EMC projects on and off for about 30 years. In almost every case the peculiarities of a piece of equipment introduce a significant amount of “black magic” into getting it to pass FCC requirements. What’s in the book are things I’ve had to learn along the way as bitter lessons (sometimes), so it is especially handy in helping to plan future work with some hope for success. Read it, mark it, underline it, put tabs in it…yes, it’s really that valuable.
⭐a colleague recommended this book to me, It has helped me alot and i would definately recommend this book to new and mid pro electronic engineers.
⭐Start with background theory, advice on several design aspects and even some DIY tools for pre-tests before someone goes to the lab for certification. I do love this book!
⭐Great book about electromagnetic compliance and what to be aware of.
