Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐If you are over 16 don’t bother reading this, Seriously. I’m giving it two stars b/c younger me would have really enjoyed this book. But I know too much now…. like what real writing is supposed to be like. It reads like a lit 101 student wrote this as a YA thesis or something. The plot has potential, but the writing style comes across so flat. There’s no connection to the characters, and you end up feeling like you’re watching some pathetic CW show (NOT the good ones lol). Seriously, if you are an actual adult who likes YA this isn’t for you.

⭐This was an enjoyable read but pretty predictable. New kid Nicole discovers she has powers and teams up with four other kids to save the world. Love triangle thrown in to keep the romantics happy.I will say that I appreciated the fact that Nicole was not willing to participate in a relationship while Blake was still dating Danielle. I also liked that the kids worked together as a team and helped each other throughout the book even when they did not individually like each other or feel like great friends.I did not like the fact that humans were considered beneath those with “powers”. Even though Nicole initially did not like that Blake and Danielle, in particular, considered humans beneath them she went along with keeping her family in the dark regarding her powers.I am somewhat curious as to what monsters the kids will face in future books and how their powers will continue to develop but probably not curious enough to continue with the series since I have so many other books I want to read as well.Sex: one kiss but nothing overly descriptiveLanguage: no swearingViolence: a couple battles with creatures being stabbed but hardly any blood drawnReligion: Greek gods and demi-gods play a role in the story but no worship of them. Characters draw power from the elements (earth, fire, water, air and aether). Students call themselves witches. Some of the students practice using gray energy secretly (not illegal to use but not taught at school). Use of black energy is forbidden and severely punished if caught.

⭐It is unfair to hold a young adult fantasy to adult standards, but there are many young adult books that do meet those standards. This book is not one of them. That is not to say that this book is substandard. But it seems simplistic and predictable. The fact that much of the fantasy is structured around gods, legends, and creatures from Greek Mythology was also not attractive to me. The premise is that Nicole arrives at a new school and discovers that she has been assigned to the secret class track for witches. In short order she begins to make friends and discoveries of a previously hidden world. The school becomes a very small part of this story as her team is swept into a quest. There is a lot of fantasy violence, some teenaged angst, and some teenaged romance with complications. The pacing is brisk, and the pages turn quickly. The story did not seem fresh or new. The characterization was also thin. Since I was not captivated by the magic, the world building or the characters, it is unlikely that I will read anymore of the series. Too many books, too little time.

⭐So, I wasn’t going to write a long review here, but I read a few of the more negative ones and I wanted to say something… Because honestly, I just don’t get it. Nor do I agree with them. This book is great. And more than that, it’s an interesting take on two subjects that are very familiar to most readers, not just of YA but of all fiction, and I find that really refreshing. Michelle Madow has always taken existing ideas and made them into something different and unique, and Elementals has that same quality. I think we have a lot of notions as readers about these pre-conceived categories, and I love that Michelle writes outside of the box.But anyway… I approached the book with an open mind and I really really enjoyed it. I love that the characters are discovering their powers and going on this adventure together while trying to figure out who they are, both as themselves and in relation to each other. I love that Nicole enters the situation completely uninitiated and comes into her own as the story progresses. She adapts very well to an unbelievable situation, and I like that in a heroine. As far as the romance is concerned, I get the issues with “instant love” but I also know I’ve personally felt that way, and I don’t think it detracts from the characters. Sometimes you’re just attracted to someone, almost mesmerized, and I didn’t have to stretch my imagination to get that. I could relate. We still have to see how Nicole and Blake grow separately, and where Michelle takes their relationship (or, indeed, if it will survive). And then there’s the Greek mythology aspect, the core of it, which I love love love. I could tell that the author had done her research and that she has an actual love and appreciation for it too – it showed in the writing. And the whole mythological “scavenger hunt” thing worked for me because, as people (or fans of Buffy) know, sometimes there’s plenty of magical stuff right where you live. And my favorite thing of all was the exploration of what a human would be like if they had “just a little” godliness in them. I liked thinking about the idea. How would you live? What would it be like for you? And would you embrace it and be a hero, even if it was really dangerous? And Elementals delves into that, along with the color magic, which I haven’t really seen anywhere else. The idea that colors have energy and power has been around in psychology and mysticism for a long time, and it’s so cool that the author incorporated that into her mythos. So I guess what I’m trying to say is that reviews aren’t everything… Think for yourself, and keep an open mind. This book is really enjoyable and worth the read and I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series takes us 🙂

⭐I won this book in a competition, it was a book I had seen and wanted to read. I didn’t know what to expect with this book as I have never read any of this authors other books. The conclusion I have come to is that u should have gotten this book and read it so much earlier than now!!! It is an amazing book, I really need to get the next book in this series to carry on in this wonderful magical and suspenseful series.I was blown away by this storyline and all the amazing characters within who were written with such thought and warmth that all the way through the book that it really comes through in the writing and makes the characters and everything they go through really real to the reader. This author is able to inject such vivid details within this book and this is. About that will keep you reading long into the night as you don’t want to put it down. This is a must read book that I highly recommended everyone reads no matter what their normal genre they read!!!

⭐Omg so I have to admit I bought the collection by accident.. But I am LOVING these books! Never gone through books so fast in my life! On the 3rd now in like 2 weeks I got the audio to go with the books once I got into them and I even have to praise that! The narrator is very good at bringing the characters to life and giving them there own voices, may sound silly but it makes all the difference if your interested in magic, Greek mythology and a little romance this this the book series for you. They lead on from each other so best start with 1st book but I recommend getting the full set as you’ll want to keep reading 🙂

⭐I’ve been meaning to read this one for a while and now I have the whole series to work through. This is definitely not a bad thing and will be reading the second soon!DescentMC, Nicole doesn’t know she’s a witch! The story is a gentle descent into the magical world. However, it was the typical setting of a high school, where the story begins and plays out – so a star off here for me. In her new class, her teacher uses magic and Nicole discovers she is a witch. (The reason for her ignorance is explained later when her family history is explored.) A quiet, approachable girl, Kate takes Nicole under her wing, promising to catch her up on the witchcraft stuff. The unavailable hot guy, Blake is thrown into the mix early on. And the blending of witchcraft and Greek mythology starts. “Did you know that we – meaning everyone in our homeroom – are descended from Greek gods?”We see Nicole develop her witchcraft, with descriptions of using energy, visualised as colour. There’s a malevolent undercurrent in the use of energy with stories about how Danielle (Blake’s girlfriend) has used energy to hurt people. Blake too, hints at there being another side to their powers.“…once a witch takes someone else’s energy – from a human or another witch – their body stops producing energy of its own. They become leeches…until they’ve taken it all.”.“…once a witch takes someone else’s energy – from a human or another witch – their body stops producing energy of its own. They become leeches…until they’ve taken it all.”DepthAfter the intro into this world, the outlines of its dangers, the real story starts when the witches do meditation one night when a comet is due to be visible. Although the rest of there class is there, it is only Nicole’s group (Blake, Danielle, Kate and Chris) that feels different afterwards. Gradually, they come to realise that they can control one of the four elements, earth, air, fire and water. The fifth, being aether. Darius, their teacher and one of the Elders of Witches, gives them a prophecy that he reckons pertains to them, about the five elements. About midway through, they are attacked by a “two-headed scorpion-tailed dog monster”, a Chimera of sorts, and there is a sense of real danger. I enjoyed their first battle in the playground here, with fireballs.AscentWhen they reach the end of their quest to solve the prophecy, the object they find waiting for them, is being guarded by another mythological creature, a harpy type woman, half bird, half woman. The reasons for them being led here and what is at stake escalates quickly. The exciting battle scene is well-written and paced, with plenty at stake for our MC. And…even better, there is a nice twist at the end, another secret that Nicole is forced to bear alone. This very much made me want to read on, and I’m looking forward to reading volume two.

⭐This book has been on my TBR (to be read) list for a little bit now and so glad I picked it out to read.Nicole has just moved into the area with her family which means a new school. And as if that wasn’t bad enough they go and give her a schedule and homeroom specifically for witches, I know, right! Crazy people! So Nicole is supposed to believe she is a witch, descended from Greek gods. One good thing about being in the homeroom is the hot guy, Blake. After meditating on an ancient comet during a mandatory out of school activity five students start presenting with enhanced powers, some specific to different elements. The thing is, will they be able to use these elemental gifts to solve a prophecy and what dangers will they face. This is a fast paced story with great characters and great scene building. I started to read this book yesterday and am now feeling the compulsion to read the next book in the series.Happy reading.

⭐So I’m a big fan of the myths and paranormal books and this is like both mixed together, but focusing a bit more on the Greek myths side than the paranormal.I was a bit hesitant going into this book, partly from the blurb of the book as it didn’t draw me in, but I’m so glad I did try it as it was way much better than I thought it would be.It’s an interesting new story that I’ve not read before, although will admit that the blurb worried me it would be a bit like The Secret Circle, it’s not which is why I think that the blurb does not do this book justice. Now my view of the main characters. Whilst I dislike Danielle I also feel that there is more to her than we’re seeing at the moment and feel that a lot of her bitterness may be a by product of her parents, I feel that there is redemption for her and hope I’m right. Chris, I feel that we don’t know too much about him yet but as he’s one of the 5 I’m sure we’ll learn more about him in the future books. Kate is the one with the brilliant mind and whilst she is still quiet and shy at the moment I feel that she may be the one with the strongest will when it comes down to it.Nicole, well for the main character who was not aware of this world, unlike all the other characters, she is coping relatively well with all the new changes. She is strong and is not letting her head be completely swayed by the man and is honourable which I admire. She still has a lot to learn and I’m looking forward to seeing her grow in the next few books. Finally there is Blake, now he is definitely hiding something but I’m not sure what yet. He also has that slight bad boy vibe to him, which I love, but if he doesn’t hurry up and end things with Danielle in book two I might be turned off him. I really hope he does as there is definitely a connection between him and Nicole, but I don’t like when there are someone else’s feelings in the mix.I’m looking forward to book two and can’t wait to read it, which I’m just off to do now. Enjoy this book as it’s a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to read more and see where it goes.
