⭐I am a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and this book was used for the intermediate level ODE course, Math 319. Although this book was tedious to read, after reading a section and working through the problems I felt I had a very good grasp of the material.After the class finished I also went back and read the two final chapters on PDE’s and boundary value problems and found them as a good starting place for the material.

⭐First a little bit of annoyance, actual review below-the kindle version is $95! It should be below $44 before it is worth buying at all. If I buy the real textbook for $144 on here, I can sell it for about $100 after I’m done with it, so it costs me $44 for the semester. If I buy the kindle version I am paying twice as much to look at the book on a tiny ereader.Contrary to what many others have said, I found this book pretty decent. I think much of how you will value this book has to do with the teacher of your class and what type of class it is. I actually barely used it because my teacher was so good, so maybe I just didn’t get the full experience. This definitely doesn’t compare to Friedberg et al’s insane book on Linear Algebra, but it is ok. Used for an upper division ODE class with all math majors, I thought it hit the spot. Not the kind of textbook you read anyway, it is an applied math textbook. That being said, there was no reason that it needed to be so big, heavy, and expensive.

⭐If you have to take this class, all I can say is I’m so sorry and best of luck. It’s difficult because of all of the math jargon. I got an A in my class (which had a horrible professor) because I was able to decrypt the equations and processes in the book.Best advice I can give is to check out the MIT Open Courseware for the areas where you are struggling. The online lectures are extremely helpful.Hope this helps!

⭐It’s my Math 319 textbook, so i had to buy it. However it can provide you with the basic knowledge for diff. eqns and has a lot of examples in the book, showing you different techniques. The bad thing is not as extensive in really proving things as i would like it to be.

⭐Its definitely the book I ordered. But I foolishly trusted the description provided by the seller. I was expecting a new book, but what I received was a book that was CLEARLY used. Frayed edges, along with marking and stamps along the side of the book indicate it was subjected to use by some organization called the ‘Academic Challenge Program’. Not only this, but there is small amounts of writing in the book. Not everything was as advertised.

⭐This textbook is not the worst I’ve ever used but it’s far from good. I won’t lie that I have something of a short attention span when bored, but this text is full of blocks upon blocks of text instead of examples. There are one or two examples in every section and often the problems at the end are about cases other than the ones covered in the section. Also many of these problems are highly theoretical (and many are proofs) and as a Cornell engineering student, I still had no idea why some of the theories were true or relevant. Sometimes these blocks of text were convoluted and so crammed with ideas that they were impossible to comprehend. As a sde note, I wouldn’t buy the ssm for this because all the odd questions are on Cramster anyways. The only one blatant strength of this book is the fact that both odd and even answers are given in the back, and as far as I know (from those problems I did) there were no/very few typos. Not an enjoyable text at all (or not as enjoyable as a math text can possibly be…), however all the info and knowledge is there, if you have the attention span strong enough to break it.

⭐I used this for a class.
