Description

The three pocketbooks comprising the English Through Pictures series are the remarkable invention of I.A. Richards and Christine Gibson, who designed them to help the learner speak, read and write English in the quickest and clearest possible way – through pictures. The authors have made a careful selection of the most widely useful English words, choosing those with the power to define other words, and have put them to work in key patterns that offer the learner the ability to communicate successfully in English. Book 1 contains a vocabulary of 250 such words, with an additional 500 developed in Book 2; these 750 words are then used in Book 3 to build a command of 1000 words which, by their defining power, hold the possibility of understanding as much as another 20,000 words of English. Throughout English Through Pictures, responsibility for learning is placed directly on the learner, who from the very start enjoys the ability to put essential words to work creating key sentence patterns where meaning is clearly shown in pictures. These simplified drawings allow learners to focus on the sentence and to enjoy growing confidence as they successfully take control of language, with the workbooks in Books 1 and 2 challenging and reinforcing their growing competence as both speakers and readers. Motivated and inspired, learners will soon find to their delight that fluent communication in English – the common language of today’s world – lies well within their grasp. English Through Pictures has already been used successfully by millions of learners in more than forty countries.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I like the product itself; I will use it as an instructional tool for people who are learning English as a Second Language.

⭐I was chair of the Department of ESL, now Second Language Studies, at the University of Hawaii for five years. I teach now in Atlanta. More recently, I’ve used this book with teenage refugees from Asia and Africa, young women who arrived with no knowledge of English at all. It proved itself really effective for one-to-one or one-to-two tutoring, better than any other textbook I’ve tried. And it’s not expensive! Volume 3 of this 3-book series was recently kidnapped from my bookshelf by an Afghani 14-year old who later confessed and begged to keep it longer.

⭐This is an awesome book. I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars only because if you are learning English without assistance, this book is missing one element – pronunciation. Otherwise, an amazing way to develop a basic understanding of English. I recommend using it along with a teacher or tutor who can teach you pronunciation, and help you practice listening skills.

⭐I am porting with permission this book to the iPad/iPhone and including sound. The prototype is in the Apple store as English from Pictures and on the internet as englishfrompictures.com. The final version should be up and running by the first of the year.I need to know how many are interested, I am counting hits on englishfrompictures.comlearn_english@me.com

⭐A part your long delay in delivering my books, the package were ok and the books very new.

⭐Very helpful for our refugee group for understanding pronouns, etc.

⭐I had been learning English on this book. At first, it was something strange feeling compare to other language text books, but it was very easy to understand grammar of English who don’t live in English speaking countries like me.In Japan, we learn English from such phrases as “This is Japan. That is America. That is England.” But it seemed to be difficult for a foreign language learner, because the first approach to English started in “sentence”, not a “word”.Compared to our Japanese textbooks, this “English through pictures series” is much easier for me to understand English. So I thanked so much to this book.
