Description

Reflective later poems of the fiery, Nobel-Prize winning Chilean poet, with English translations and the original Spanish side-by-side on facing pages. While things are settling down, here I’ve left my testament,my shifting extravagaria,so whoever goes on reading itwill never take in anythingexcept the constant movingof a clear and bewildered man,a man rainy and happy, lively and autumn-minded.–from “Autumn testament”Extravagaria marks an important stage in Neruda’s progress as a poet. The book was written just after he had returned to Chile after many wanderings and moved to his beloved Isla Negra on the Pacific coast. The collection celebrates this coming to rest, this rediscovery of the sea and the land, and the evolution of a a lyric poetry that is decidedly more personal than Neruda’s earlier work. Written in what he called his “autumnal” period, the sixty-eight poems range from the wistful to the exultant, combining psalm and speculation, meditation and humorous aside.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Well, first off how could anything b Neruda be bad. Second, the translation is well done. Third, the collection is sheer joy.

⭐The translations are well done. It’s nice to have both languages to read and compare. Good variety ofNeruda’s poems. A wonderful introduction to this great poet.

⭐Beautifully presented set of poems with side by side translations.

⭐the description said it was in good shape, however there is a crease on the back cover that made it so undesirable, but still great.

⭐EXCELLENT!

⭐Pablo Neruda writes in a style that is so accessible and yet so elegant..Extravagaria is the first of his books of poems that I have read (having only read some selected poems of his before) – to read the poems as they were meant to be read in this collection is a delight.. I only wish I could read them in Spanish – I guess I will have to hit the books…

⭐A wonderful collection of Naruda’s work. There is a sense of settling down in these collection of his work that is really quite beautiful. I also find Alastair Reid’s translation more beautiful than others I’ve seen. The original spanish text on the opposite page is also nice and handy to have.

⭐I received this book on time and in perfect condition. This poetry book is all I expected and more! Pablo Neruda doesn’t need a rating, it’s obvious a book of his poetry is perfect! These poems are beautiful and the translations are clear and helpful too. This book is a fantastic aid for me in practicing my Spanish while also enjoying my other love, that of poetry.

⭐I bought this book as a present for a family member and she was very pleased.
