Description

Kidnapping is one of the cruellest crimes – lives are put at risk for cold, hard cash. But when Somali pirates seize the crew of a yacht off the coast of Africa, they bite off more than they can chew.

One of the hostages has friends in high places and Spider Shepherd is put on the case. He goes deep undercover in an audacious plan to bring an end to the pirate gang’s reign of terror.

But as Shepherd closes in on his quarry he realises that there’s much more at stake than the lives of the hostages and that the pirates are involved in a terrorist plot that will strike at the heart of London.

⭐ In my pursuit of reading the whole series of Dan Shepherd, I am now always almost expecting to be disappointed, as there usually is at least a bad book in any series. I was not disappointed, as again, this is a very good book. I appreciate the fact that Stephen always bring something new with each book: here Dan is up against Somalian Pirate (and there is the continuing back story of the IRA as well). As usual it is nice to see that the author did some good research about the different topics (piracy, tanker ships operating procedures, etc.), as it brings some realism and it is nice to learn something new too with each book. To note it is nice to see in this book some returning characters from previous installment (in particular Carol Bosch… a one-night-stand partner of Dan…). My only slight criticisms are: 1/ at some point during the book Dan is undercover in an office as a HR person, and this part doesn’t really bring much to the story and isn’t overly exciting. 2/ Whereas Stephen manages to draw some very good villains in this story (e.g. Crazy Boy, Roodie, Blue), I couldn’t help but feeling that the final confrontations were a bit too brief. For instance the confrontations between Dan and the pirates in Somalia is going a tad too easily. I almost wish Stephen would have made them a bit more challenging for Dan and his team. Likewise, the back story related to IRA and their threats on Dan (leading to his son and Katra being in danger), also ends up in a slightly too easy fashion. However again, these are minor points, as by and large, this is an enthralling read. Note for those familiar with the serie: Yokely is not in this book. I hope he is featured in some of the next ones, as he is an interesting shady type of character.

⭐ I am alternating reading them, and having a hard time picking the favorite. Probably Milton since he does not have ready backup, but it is a close run thing. And I am really enjoying the time reading both. This one will give you a lot of info on mega-ships, all get interesting, and the action is the best in the series.

⭐ This is another fine thriller from British writer Stephen Leather. For me, authors from the UK seem to do a better job than most of creating believable characters. I unapologetically admit I am an Anglophile and somewhat biased.FAIR GAME is a gripping page turner with Dan “Spider” Shepherd dropped into the thick of it once again. This time, he has been lured away from SOCA (Serious Organised Crime Agency) by his former boss there, Charlotte “Charlie” Button, who is now with MI5, to help locate a gang of Somali Pirates. These thugs have kidnapped five crew members from a yacht while they were sailing it to Australia to its new owner. The pirates, who seem to be stoned most of the time from chewing khat leaves, demand an exorbitant ransom (5 million English Pounds) for the crew’s safe return. Things turn ugly when the pirates learn that the yacht’s new owner and the insurance company are not going to pay the ransom. Uh oh! What’s Her Majesty’s best anti-terrorist agent going to do about it? If you’ve read any of the other books in the series, you’ll have a good idea of how truly deadly Dan can be.There are more tense moments in this book: Revengeful IRA assassins on Dan’s trail; a huge, minimally manned container ship sailing through dangerous, pirate infested waters; A Muslim terrorist’s nasty scheme to ruin England’s economy; Dan’s son Liam’s badgering him to be sent to a boarding school…and what can be more tense than living with a teenager?I highly recommend this to old “Spider” hands and newbies alike. 5 stars

⭐ This series has been fantastic. I love the idea of a story from the British perspective- everything is just a little different in terms of world view and America’s role in world politics. Even the slang expressions are different and interesting. The way it holds my interest reminds me of the Jack Reacher series. I hope Leatherman continues to write-Ill be at the latest book soon and dont want to stop

⭐ Pure fun — stories right from today’s headlines. Leather is a masterful writer. Even the small characters have backstories. Read this series in order — I have. That way you know the background of all the main characters, as well as cases Spider has solved in the past. There are a number of twists in the novel. As Spider Shepherd would say, “it’s complicated!”

⭐ NO SPOILERS:Our webbed friend has nothing on Dan “Spider” Shepherd! If the Somali pirates only knew what was waiting for them they likely would have given up pirating for barber college! What to like:1.) Topics are meticulously researched. From Somalia pirates to large container ships. It is the sign of a good Author that can provide detail without getting overly technical (AKA keeping it interesting)2.) Keeping the action grounded and graphic. One of my personal pet peeves is that Authors will often write action scenes at 10k. Not so with Mr. Leather’s where he writes for MA audiences3.) While every author weaves in their respective “soapboxes”, Mr. Leather does it in a way that doesn’t distract from the story. I.E. While I don’t know it for a fact, it is fairly obvious to me that Mr. Leather is not enamored with UK immigration policiesSummary:This is a fast moving plot that cost me 2-nights sleep! My only advice might be: Dude, get a better Publicist in the USA! Sales rank for “Fair Game” in USA = 662k and in UK 7k! Another tip for USA readers is to pick up Mr. Leather’s earlier books that are selling for pennies!

⭐ One of his better stories that keeps you reading. Plenty of action and suspense same as his other great reads !

⭐ This book starts off with some good action and continues on through all the way to the end. The sitter is great at weaving multiple story lines together and always reserves some mystery for the ending!

⭐ The 5 star rating is for the series as a whole, not just for this book alone. I regard a 5 star rating to indicate that I could envisage reading the book again. Series are a little problematic. I could imagine rereading a single book, but a whole series? In this case, one consisting of 8 books so far with at least 4,000 pages. This series is that good. I started reading them less than 3 weeks ago. If you haven’t read any of them, then you’ve got a treat in store. Go back and read ‘Hard Landing’.My only quibble is that number 9 in the series isn’t due to be released until July (hopefully early July)…

⭐ i dont do reviews i just want to tead another book so lets move on without any more time wasted
