⭐As far as I can tell, this is the first serious exposition of the interpretation of Yang-Mills-like gauge theories for the standard model in terms of connections on principal fibre bundles.These two sets of lecture notes (the first by Mayer, the second by Drechsler) were given as early as 1975, which precedes the early work by Atiyah from about 1977 onwards on the application of fibre bundle topology to Yang-Mills-like gauge theories. So this Drechsler/Mayer book apparently marks the historical beginning of the collaboration between mathematicians and physicists working on the application of fibre bundles with general unitary structure groups to the kinds of gauge theories which are now ubiquitous in particle physics and quantum field theory for the standard model.I don’t currently possess a copy of these Lecture Notes by Drechsler and Mayer, but it is a very well known book in the profession. So for the benefit of people who don’t know what it is, I am writing a few words about it here. (I would certainly buy this book myself if it was $40 or less. I’m just waiting for the chance!)Most historical accounts in the gauge theory literature about the early history of the link-up between gauge theory physics and fibre bundle mathematics refer to this as one of the earliest developments, but these lectures are still a valuable introduction. They are referred to for their contents as much as for their historical value.PS. 2018-12-29.I now possess a copy of this book, obtained through one of Amazon’s partner companies. It is in fact very useful for gauge theory mathematics, particularly the lecture notes by Mayer. I still rate this book as 5 stars.
