Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This isn’t necessarily a bad book, but it is a very dry read. The first chapter felt very much like being taught rote procedures and didn’t really dwell on the motivations and applications behind techniques. Also, if you can’t convince yourself of derivations through mathematical statements alone, and need a detailed explanation in words, this book may take some getting used to.
⭐Rose books generally covers the material clearly, and examples are really well chosen to interest readers.
⭐I had to buy this book for a course I am taking. It’s pretty much a standard probability text but the quality of the publishing is poor. It almost seems as though no editor looked at it. The page margins are about 1/4 inch instead of the usual 1 inch and in some places it’s even less. The text goes right to the edge of the page. Formulas don’t run off the edge of the page but they come close. I don’t know if they did that to save money or what but it makes the book seem cheap. They have lots of problem sets, but some of the answered problems are not answered as fully as someone just learning this material might like. All in all, if I didn’t have to buy this book, I never would have.
⭐The exercises tend to be worded in a very convoluted manner. It is often difficult to figure out exactly what is being asked. For example: “How many outcome sequences are possible when a die is rolled four times, where we say, for instance, that the outcome is 3, 4, 3, 1 if the first roll landed on 3, the second on 4, the third on 3, and the fourth on 1?”All this simply to ask, “How many outcomes are possible when a dice is rolled four times?”
⭐Like most have said, unless you have a professor that is good at explaining the material, you’ll be screwed in whatever class you need this for. As a person with an Engineering degree and significant experience in high-level mathematics, you’d think I’d be able to comprehend this book. Here are my primary issues with the book:1) The explanations are worded in the most vague fashion possible. While I enjoy brevity, it’s best left to simple topics and books where the reader already has a baseline understanding of the material.2) The exercises prefer quantity over quality. It’s great if you have a book with a ton of options to improve your understanding of the material, however there are exercises in each section that seemingly have nothing to do with anything in that section, especially in the early chapters.3) It seems that all of the exercises are intentionally designed to trick the reader. Again, if this were an advanced probability course I could understand it, but it’s hard enough to get a grasp on the concepts with the terrible explanations in the chapters without having intentionally misleading questions.I couldn’t imagine being a sophomore or junior in college and taking this course. Our university only requires Calc 2 as a prerequisite and that is definitely not enough information. Be prepared to go to office hours frequently or find another textbook to supplement this one.
⭐That Probability book is addressed to University students in STEM degrees. Very useful book.
⭐The book itself is a 3. It’s not great, it’s not terrible. It’s just kind of an unnecessary entry into the library of books on probability. The e-book, however, gets a 1 due to the DRM. I bought the e-book so I could switch between devices, but for $130, you can read it on a maximum of two devices. Don’t have your kindle with you, not at your desktop, and just want to check something on your phone right before an exam? Too bad! All you get is an error message saying that you can’t download the book, with no indication of whether or not (or how) you can de-register it from one device to read it on the one you have.Basically, it’s a typical book from Pearson, with all of their greedy publishing practices, and if it’s not mandatory that you get this specific one, I would not recommend it.
⭐I don’t know how this book compares to previous editions, but I find the writing in this book is very clear but concise, there are plenty of examples and exercises for each chapter. You could easily learn probability on your own with this book, no professor required.
⭐The book itself is good, but the print is just not that good
⭐This is not what a would call: “Used-Good”… This is more “Used-Bad/dirty”. I only keep it because It’s mandatory for my classes. Very disappointing.
⭐Excelente libro, esencial para cursos de probabilidad. Para de lo básico e incrementa el nivel hasta lo más complicado .
