Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I got this to try to learn the rules of football, being one of those people who basically know nothing other than if they’re moving in the right direction, it’s good. This is NOT the book for this. This seems more like it’s written for coaches who want to improve their teams. I mean, I’ve read the whole book and I still don’t know how many people are on a team, what the difference is between a halfback, fullback, etc. I

⭐This book is too advanced for someone born outside the USA, and who is trying to understand the game from scratch. For e.g. he starts off on page 1 of chapter one talking repeatedly about a “down” but fails to explain what a down is! No problem, just turn to the glossary to understand the term, except that the book lacks a glossary! This pattern continues as you go on beyond chapter one, and frankly I ended up giving up soon afterwards. I am giving it 2 stars since I suspect it may be of some use to somebody who knows something about the game already, but frankly it is useless to someone with no knowledge of the game. I was hoping for more hand-holding from a “for dummies” book. Frankly, you almost feel like a dummy when page 1 of chapter 1 of “Football for Dummies” is above your head!

⭐I became interested in football for the first time this year with an exciting college football season. I’ve tried to watch NFL football with my husband but all it looked like to me was, as my daughter says, “A bunch of dudes piling on top of each other.” I really wanted to begin to learn football, so I bought this book. I love it! I’ve got sticky notes in it, underlines, highlights and margin notes. I give it 4 1/2 stars because some of the descriptions still assume I know or understand just a little more than I do. Plus, the index is not comprehensive enough. I’ve watched games after using the book and understood more of what I saw on the field, and after watching a game I understood more of what I read in the book…so it worked both ways. I still have a long way to go but am now looking forward to next fall and the beginning of football season. I am even entertaining the idea of buying season tickets to watch my favorite team.

⭐Having never been around football growing up and not having any friends really into the sport I found myself at a loss when around my boyfriend during football season. Rather than continue to bother him with what for most American would be stupid questions, I picked up this book. If you’re like me and just looking for basic knowledge so you don’t feel like an idiot when watching a game or listening to football talk I highly recommend this. The chapters are broken down so you don’t need to read the whole thing, just the parts geared toward spectators (some sections are written for new players, coaches etc).

⭐I bought this book for my 13-year-old grandson who has played youth soccer all his life and never was too interested in football, much less as a player. In my mind, a basic knowledge and appreciation of the game is essential to getting through life in that it provides a common topic for guys to talk about at any stage in life. Before giving it to him, I read the book myself to see if it was what I was looking for.I have been a fan of Howie Long since the days he played for the Oakland Raiders. I think he would make a great coach at any level. Now that I have admitted to bias, here’s what I think of his book.I’m not sure it’s right for the reader who has never watched a football game, although that may be a rarity. Nor will it be necessarily appropriate for anyone who has played high school, college or professional football. For everyone else, I think it’s a good way to learn the basics and to appreciate how and what every player position contributes to the success of his team on the field. The rules, including penalties and officials’ signals, are clearly explained. Basic plays are deconstructed and illustrated. Both offense and defense are given equal attention. Football jargon is defined. There are tips and suggestions for people learning to play various positions. You come away with a better appreciation for the subtleties and strategies the average person might miss. This is not a book to be read once and then put away. Someone who is not all that familiar with the game may want to refer to it during and after a game.Lastly, through the whole book Long demonstrates his absolute love of the game and his sense of decency and fairness. My grandson’s dad and I are going to enjoy watching a game with him.

⭐My husband has been a football fan all his life. I didn’t want to become a “football widow” and honestly wanted to learn the game so I could enjoy it as well. Howie Long does a great job of explaining the rules in laymen’s terms so you can learn about the game so you can enjoy it both live and on TV

⭐This is a good book for people who’s understanding and following of football ranges from totally clueless to moderate interest. The second edition picks up some key things that were absent from the first edition like overtime and how it functions on the college and pro levels.Pretty easy read that isn’t patronizing, and even people who understand football will find the facts and personal stories in the book exciting…if you’re comfortable reading a book that says “Dummies” on the cover, that is.

⭐I love this book- am a bit of a novice so this book explains so much- it is written so it is easy to understand both easier and complex parts of the game!

⭐Bought this for my daughter so that she could learn about the game in her own time and at her own pace rather than listen to my lectures. She has found it invaluable. Writing style clear and easy to understand, although perhaps would have benefited from a few more pictures to illustrate the text. It does however do what it says on the tin – offer an introduction to game.

⭐Good book to help you lean the game. Well written and good graphs to visualise concepts.

⭐An easy to understand but comprehensive manual, Covers every aspect of the game with additional insights into the great players.

    ⭐Very nice condition
