Description

Isaac Asimov’s Foundation Trilogy is one of the highwater marks of science fiction. The monumental story of a Galactic Empire in decline and a secret society of scientists who seek to shorten the coming Dark Age with tools of Psychohistory, Foundation pioneered many themes of modern science fiction. Now, with the approval of the Asimov estate, three of today’s most acclaimed authors have completed the epic the Grand Master left unfinished. The Second Foundation Trilogy begins with Gregory Benford’s Foundation’s Fear, telling the origins of Hari Seldon, the Foundation’s creator. Greg Bear’s Foundation and Chaos relates the epic tale of Seldon’s downfall and the first stirrings of robotic rebellion. Now, in David Brin’s Foundation’s Triumph, Seldon is about to escape exile and risk everything for one final quest-a search for knowledge and the power it bestows. The outcome of this final journey may secure humankind’s future-or witness its final downfall…

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was trying to figure out the historical chronology of where the three new books fit into the Foundation series. It was not so simple. I had to invent a new science called psychochronology, and employ hundreds of skilled psychotics to help me reach my goal.A lifetime later (well, more like an hour), I am finally finished. This is how the new books are threaded into Asimov’s previous books:Prelude to FoundationForward the Foundation Part 1: Eto Demerzel —–>Foundation’s Fear Part 2: Cleon I Part 3: Dors Venabili Part 4: Wanda SeldonFoundation Part 1: The Psychohistorians —–>Foundation and Chaos —–>Foundation’s Triumph Part 2: The Encyclopedists Part 3: The Mayors Part 4: The Traders Part 5: The Merchant PrincesFoundation and EmpireSecond FoundationFoundation’s EdgeFoundation and EarthYou can just read the new books themselves and still get plenty of enjoyment.Or you can reread all of Forward the Foundation with Foundation’s Fear after Part 1: Eto Demerzel (Parts 2, 3, 4 are a prerequisite to Foundation and Chaos). Then read Foundation and Chaos, which is actually an epically expanded version of Foundation; Part 1: The Psychohistorians). Then finish with Foundation’s Triumph. The appendix of Foundation’s Triumph has a historical timeline that combs the Foundation chronology even finer, but not in a way that lets you read the books in any practical manner.

⭐This is a good old college try to continue what I consider the best science fiction series of all. It comes very near to success but falls just shy. While Brin is a brilliant writer, he attempts to we’ve too many strands into the story, even elements of his own independent books, and consequentially fails to capture the magic of Asimov ‘s tale. Asimov paralleled his Foundation on the traditional views and factors bringing about the fall of Rome and the struggle to restore an advanced civilization – setting it a galactic future. Hair Seldom is the mathematical deterministic stand in for Christianity and Classical civilization destined to restore Western Civilization much as the Foundation is destined to assimilate the Robot plan and triumph by embracing a synthetic diversity and free will. Bring aims at following Asimov’s blueprint but adds to many rooms to fully succeed. Without the final chronology, he would have completely disappointed, as it is,Brin gets to the end zone but without fully satisfying expectations

⭐Book in condition as described by seller. Very fast shipping. Highly recommended.

⭐But I still gave it 5 stars because he kept me reading to the end… I agree with the guy who wrote in his review “What a betrayal of the original benevolent character of Daneel and a slap in the face of Hari Seldon as the genius author behind the plan.” Because it makes Seldon appear weak and leaves the future to an all controlling Daneel. But I do believe that this author gives anyone who reads the book the realization that the question of how “good or bad” the maximum/most advanced AI might be is a good one to debate (as it now is being debated in the scientific community). I say “unfulfilling” because he could have continued long enough to get Hari & Dors together rather than leaving it just implied. And also because he never did show us how Hari manages to appear at specific celebrated times as a holographic projection in support of his “plan”…. oh well…

⭐I know the book is out of print, but I have to put in this review. If you are a Foundation Series fan please do not bother reading this book and certainly skip the previous two of the series (Foundation’s Chaos and Foundation’s Fear). I have tried twice to get through this terrible book and quit in disgust both times. Three authors (Binford, Bear, Brin) were given permission by Asimov’s estate to write a sequel series to Asimov’s Foundation Series and what a mess they made of it. David Brin is the best of the three and he makes an attempt to clean up and explain the silly characters and plot points the other two writers inserted into the Asimov world. Simulation characters (Sims) imbedded in robotic code come alive and menace everyone, robot factions opposing Daneel come out of the woodwork, human rebels vying for control of human history kidnap Hari, and on and on. This series takes the idea that Asimov started in his sequel books that robots were the ones who actually controlled human development and emotions and extends this philosophy way beyond belief. Finally, in this book the final trashing of the original Foundation Series concept is completed. It is shown by David Brin that the elegant and beautiful Seldon Plan was but a stopgap to a world of group-think with no individual will and the robot R. Daneel Ovilvaw is the manipulator of all mankind. And his reason? Because he alone thinks it’s the right thing to do. What a betrayal of the original benevolent character of Daneel and a slap in the face of Hari Seldon as the genius author behind the plan. I am so disappointed. Two stars only because he tried to clean up the mess.

⭐Brin tried too hard to connect the two previous books in this series with the original Asimov Foundation, Robot, and Empire series. I think Brin, along with Bear and Benford, did a great injustice to the orinal work by Asimov. This book is not terrible in and of itself, but it does tread roughly upon an established and revered science fiction universe. How Daneel can be such an integral part of the story in this series, yet be all but nonexistent in the Asimov books is a mystery none of these authors really explains. This book, along with Foundation’s Fear and Foundations Chaos only left me aggravated. Angry with myself for having read them.Since it only adds contention, I would only recommend it to those who must read everything Asimov-related, or to those David Brin fans out there. I give it three stars because it is a good science fiction story…it just isn’t a good Foundation story.

⭐great conclusion written david brin building on greg bear & gregory benford previous entries. disappointing that first of series is not currently available in kindle.

⭐As I got the books on seperate days & not in the order (1 2 3 ) so glad I did although my wife was a bitoff with me as once I started I had to keep going until I finished the page of the third book. Must admitThat I I did not expect to find that I would enjoy the books as much as I did. So must thank them for keeping the the flame a.light

⭐Although this book explains itself it gets better if you read Azimov`s Robot series first.

⭐It was the book to nearly finish the story of Hari Seldon, but i feel there could be more to be told, but no complaints, anexceptional book, still a lot of missing pieces, maybe another writer might take it on!!Many thanksJohn Markland

⭐Starts off okay but then loses its way and just becomes tedious.
