⭐One has many options from which to choose in searching for a suitable introductory text of Functional Analysis. Erwin Kreyszig seems to have won the day with his introductory textbook (Introductory Functional Analysis With Applications, Wiley). Notwithstanding the popularity of Kreyszig’s excellent text, this text can serve as one alternative. Let us briefly survey content (all of five chapters):(1) Measure and Integration: forty-nine pages including connections to probability and random variables (pages 11 and 24, respectively).(2) Lebesgue Spaces: beginning with convexity and inequalities, ending with Fourier and Laplace.(3) Hilbert Spaces: scalar products, orthogonal systems. An example details so-called Gibbs’ phenomenon (page 149).(4) Distributions: test functions, differentiation, convergence and convolution, Fourier and Laplace revisited.This Chapter is a highlight of the text, not least due to its applicability for applications in Electrodynamics.(5) Linear Operators: bounded and unbounded operators, concluding with spectral theory.With only a first exposure to real analysis (say, Rudin) as prerequisite, the text does fulfill its goal of “..emphasizing practicality of the results ” as well being an accessible introduction pitched to physicists.Examples abound. Each chapter concludes with exercises and their full solutions or hints to aid in finding solutions.Notes and appendices amplify certain abstractions, elaborations which include more detailed proofs.The solved examples are worth the interest of the studious reader, allowing for self-study.A review in Journal SIAM reads: ” aimed at physicists with minimal prerequisites…examples of the type occurring in physics problems…choice of topics is good.” (Volume 33, p.509,1991).A helpful companion, indeed.
