Description
Widely regarded as the most authoritative and comprehensive book in its field, the fourth edition of Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics includes new and substantially updated chapters to this highly praised text. Extensively updated throughout, this new edition contains substantially expanded chapters on poroelasticity, wave propogation, and subsurface stresses Features entirely new chapters on rock fractures and micromechanical models of rock behaviour Discusses fundamental concepts such as stress and strain Offers a thorough introduction to the subject before expertly delving into a fundamental, self-contained discussion of specific topics Unavailable for many years, now back by popular demand. An Instructor manual CD-ROM for this title is available. Please contact our Higher Education team at HigherEducation@wiley.com for more information.Reviews:“With this attention to detail, and rigorous adherence to clarity and exactness in description, this edition will consolidate the standing achieved by the earlier editions as a most authoritative and comprehensive book in its field. It will continue to serve as a leading reference work for geoscientists interested in structural geology, tectonics and petrophysics as well as for civil, mining and petroleum engineers.” (Petroleum Geoscience)”…I consider this book to be an invaluable reference for studying and understanding the fundamental science at the base of rock mechanics. I believe this to be a must-have textbook and I strongly recommend it to anyone, student or professional, interested in the subject.” (Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering)”An excellent book, very well presented, and is a must for the shelves of serious engineers and scientists active or interested in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering…. Highly recommended.” (South African Geographical Journal, 2008)

Editorial Reviews: Review “An excellent book, very well presented, and is a must for the shelves of serious engineers and scientists active or interested in the fields of rock mechanics and rock engineering…. Highly recommended.” (South African Geographical Journal, 2008) “…I consider this book to be an invaluable reference for studying and understanding the fundamental science at the base of rock mechanics. I believe this to be a must-have textbook and I strongly recommend it to anyone, student or professional, interested in the subject.” (Rock Mechanics and Rock Engineering) Review “Previous editions of this seminal book have provided students, researchers and practitioners the world over with the rock mechanics basics for engineering applications. In this 4th edition, Professor Zimmerman, a world expert in the field, has now updated the content in line with modern thinking, while retaining vital emphasis on the fundamentals of the subject. I strongly recommend this book to anyone studying, researching or using rock mechanics: the book is invaluable, both as a learning tool and as a reference source for the underpinning fundamental science.” –John A Hudson, Emeritus Professor, Imperial College, and President (2007-2011), International Society for Rock Mechanics “The bible of rock mechanics has been updated with several new chapters on topics that were in their infancy at the time of the last edition of this book. My favorite update is Zimmerman’s skillful presentation of the hydro-mechanical and seismic properties of fractures. There is no other comparable presentation of this broad range of material with such mathematical depth and rock mechanics foundations. The reference list is priceless. I consider this a must-have textbook for serious student and expert alike in the area of fractured rock.” –Laura Pyrak-Nolte, Purdue University, Indiana, USA. Book Description Since the publication of the first edition in 1969, Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics has been widely regarded as the most authoritative and comprehensive book in its field. Out of print for many years, this classic book is now available in its revised 4th edition. Extensively updated throughout, this new edition contains substantially expanded chapters on poroelasticity, wave propagation, and subsurface stresses, as well as entirely new chapters on rock fractures and micromechanical models of rock behavior. Beginning with a detailed discussion of fundamental concepts such as stress and strain, this text offers a thorough introduction to the subject before expertly delving into a fundamental, self-contained discussion of specific topics. Unmatched in the breadth of its treatment of rock mechanics, the new edition of this highly praised text is an invaluable resource for all geologists, geophysicists, and geotechnical engineers working in the field today. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is a good book, kind of classic in rock mechanics. And it covered almost every aspect of rock mechanics. This is a good hand book if you are working on rock mechanics. However, it is not very readable. It has too many calculus equations and sometimes jumps too quick. After I read Means book ‘Stress and Strain’ which is very readable, I still find the first chapter of this book difficult to understand at some parts. So I would say, it is not very “fundamental”.
⭐Classic book of rock mechanics
⭐It is a good book for Engineers.
⭐Bought for an engineer friend for his continuing education. He hasn’t complained, so I’ll assume he loves it! 😉
⭐It took some time for the book to be delivered, but apart from that the book was new and in good condition.
⭐Arrived in timely manner, product as described.
⭐This books covers some fundamental theories related to rock mechanics in a very well presented format. It is a good reference when you need more insights into the theoretical aspects of rock mechanics. I highly recommend this book!
⭐good
⭐arrived on time and as described. could not ask for more.
⭐The book is the exact print of the US version, with the same mistakes. The paper texture quality isn’t that great, feels like badly processed recycled paper. Some of the pages have smeared text (two to be exact) . And some papers are joined at the edges. Had to get a knife to split them.
