Description
Georgia has been called the world’s most beautiful country, yet only little is known about it beyond its borders. This topical and vital book by the “ideal chronicler” (Literary Review) Peter Nasmyth is the perfect and much-celebrated introduction to its remarkable people, landscape, and culture.Over its 3,000-year-old history, Georgia has been ruled by everyone from the Greeks to the Ottomans, became a coveted part of the Russian Empire for a hundred years, and was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1921. In twenty-five years, Georgia has undergone a dramatic socioeconomical and political transformation, and although its political situation remains precarious, Georgia’s strong sense of nationhood has reinvigorated the country.Vivid and comprehensive, Nasmyth’s Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry is a unique eyewitness account of Georgia’s rebirth and creates an unforgettable portrait of its remarkable landscape, history, people and culture. Based on personal experience and offering fascinating insights into the life of ordinary and high profile Georgians, it is essential reading for anyone who does not yet know, or wants to know more, of this astonishing place.

⭐This book is a must read: I cannot recommend this book highly enough for anyone who wants to visit the Republic of Georgia. I bought the book to provide some context during my trip, and it was perfect. Every time I saw something interesting, I could refer to the book for the context and depth which makes an experience even more special.Although the first half is set in the late 1980s and early 1990s, the author combines an interesting personal travel and cultural journey with well-timed explanations of the historical and cultural backstories of each area. In 2018, as I visited Tbilisi, Uplistsikhe and Gori, Gudauri and Pasanauri, Svenali and Ushguli, and Telavi and Sighnaghi in Kakheti — I found his every experience still relevant. At times, I would look at a photo in the book, then look up to see that exact spot. Moreover, the second half covers the turbulent 1990s and 2000s, helping me understand the noticeable changes in both the historic locations and the culture itself.Again: this is a must read for anyone who plans to visit Georgia.
⭐I purposely waited until after my trip to Georgia to read this book, feeling that I’d be able to relate to it much better after having been there. In fact, that proved to be the right thing to do. The book is a wonderful read. Nasmyth’s prose brings the landscape and people to life. It enabled me to reflect on what I’d seen and to understand it more deeply.
⭐Important, well written and researched book about this unique small Republic-Nation in the Caucasus mountains Get some good authentic (!) Georgian wine, dream about the best Georgian foods and take a long travel through this developing country of a very unique and proud Judeo-Christian citizens.
⭐Peter Nasmyth’s ”Georgia: In the Mountains of Poetry” is a captivating and lovely introduction to the country of Georgia with its tumultuous past and extremely diverse people and landscape. As a Georgian myself, I find this book one of the best English-language travelogues ever written about my country.
