Description

As fresh and shocking as today’s headlines, a bone-chilling Tempe Brennan novel of international black marketeering in fetal tissue, decades old mass murder, and contemporary homicide from New York Times bestselling author and world-class forensic anthropologist Kathy Reichs.

It was a summer morning in 1982 when soldiers ravaged the village of Chupan Ya, raping and killing women and children. Twenty-three victims are said to lie in the well where, twenty years later, Dr. Temperance Brennan and a team from the Guatemalan Forensic Anthropology Foundation now dig. No records were kept. To their families, the dead are “the disappeared.”

Forensic anthropologist for the medical examiners in North Carolina and Montreal, Tempe is in Guatemala for a month’s service to help some families identify and bury their dead. She digs in a cold, damp pit where she finds a hair clip, a fragment of cloth, a tiny sneaker. Her trowel touches something hard: the hip of a child no more than two years old.

It’s heartbreaking work. Something savage happened here twenty years ago. The violence continues today. The team is packing up for the day when an urgent satellite call comes in. Two colleagues are under attack. Shots ring out, and Tempe listens in horror to a woman’s screams. Then there is silence. Dead silence.

With this new violence, everything changes, both for the team and for Tempe, who’s asked by the Guatemalan police for her expertise on another case. Four privileged young women have vanished from Guatemala City in recent months. One is the Canadian ambassador’s daughter. Some remains have turned up in a septic tank, and Tempe unfortunately knows septic tanks.

Teaming with Special Crimes Investigator Bartolomé Galiano, and with Montreal detective Andrew Ryan, who may have more than just professional reasons to join her on the case, Tempe soon finds herself in a dangerous web that stretches far beyond Guatemala’s borders. The stakes are huge. As power, money, greed, and science converge, Tempe must make life-altering choices.

From cutting-edge science in the lab, where Tempe studies fetal bones and cat hair DNA, to a chilling encounter in a lonely morgue, Grave Secrets is powerful, page-turning entertainment from a crime fiction superstar who combines riveting authenticity with witty, elegant prose.

⭐ Unlike other mysteries in this series the primary location this time is Guatemala. Previously, Brennan’s work in Central America has been alluded to without giving details. This time, we join Brennan in the excavation of a burial site of murder victims from Guatemala’s Civil War.As usual, complications developed and Brennan is drawn into the investigation of a number of disappearances, possibly the work of a serial killer.Officials in this corrupt country block her efforts at identifying a body recovered from a dump site. The officials even go so far as to cremate the remains before Brennan is able to complete her work. You won’t be disappointed, there’s a Quebec attachment through a pompous ambassador’s missing daughter. When Brennan returns to Montreal, Ryan is drawn into this story, too. It seems Ryan’s college roommate is the lead investigator Brennan is working with in Guatemala.Twists and turns abound and you are lead through another compelling mystery. Kathy Reichs has created the only female investigator I’m interested in following. I preorder every one of her books as soon as it’s announced. I wasn’t disappointed withGrave Secrets.

⭐ Okay, like all the Temperance Brennan books by Kathy Reichs that I’ve read, I enjoyed ‘GRAVE SECRETS’, but this was not her best effort. The story was pretty good, though for me at least, hard to follow with a large number of characters to keep track of, even though I take notes as I go along. Brennan was in top form getting to the bottom of things (in this one the very bottom) and shaking up the bad guys. The ending was kind of out of no where though. What was Tempe thinking by going out to investigate in the condition she was in? At some point, Brennan has to be smarter than that. Any time that a writer has to take a chapter to explain everything that happened and why, I get the impression that either that author doesn’t think the reader is smart enough to follow along or that the writer did not do a good enough job putting the novel together. This one was probably a combination of those. My feeling here is go ahead and read ‘GRAVE SECRETS’. It’s a good read and will keep your interest. Just don’t expect it to live up to other Temperance Brennan novels. Still good, but not great. In my opinion, Kathy Reichs is one of the more dependable authors around.

⭐ I have to admit that I found this to be one of the weakest in the five novel series, but even in that, it’s worth reading if you’ve become a fan of Ms. Reichs. Perhaps when one stumbles upon a good author and a great series such as Temperance Brennan, we get our expectations set very high and it’s disappointing when we’re let down.Perhaps the problem with this book is its preachiness. While I can certainly understand Ms. Reichs’ horror at what happened in Guatemala, it tends to bog down the other mystery in the book, concerning the disappearance of four young girls and the discovery of a body in a septic tank. Now, that’s ONE unnerving scene, in which Tempe goes into the septic bank to remove the body. It makes me think about what goes on in our septic systems. The addition of Bat Galiano as a possible love interest also seems unnecessary; I think Reichs has prolonged long enough the romance between Tempe and Ryan. They’re obviously meant for each other, and her cute little ending about which one of the cops is Tempe running off with is really a cheap slam to her fans. This book moves a little slower, and additonal preachiness comes in regard to stem cell research.Write good mysteries, Kathy, as you have in the past and don’t expose us to your views on world issues. Including them in the plot is one thing, but jamming them down our throats is another. But, hey, I’ll be there for #6.RECOMMENDED.

⭐ bought a used book, and came in great condition, though not the same cover as pictured. not too bad on shipping speed. as far as the reading, it was a good book, not her best work, but good read in the series. looking forward to the next.

⭐ I really enjoy the Temperance Brennan novels for the detail and research that is involved as well as the story lines, I learn something new in each book. Also, I like the fact that the settings are real and I can find the towns, roads, and the general locations that are involved in Dr. Brennan’s work and life. The overall content in the books more then makes up for the little annoyances I run across in the stories, though the biggest annoyance comes with the need to put down a Kathy Reichs novel once I have started it.

⭐ One of her better except going horny over two detectives and the finish being a bit unbelievable. Will check the next to see

⭐ Never disappointing in intrigue, characters and atmosphere. The Brennan novels make a reliable read for vacation or any relaxation time.

⭐ A different locale and yet another great plot from Kathy Reichs. Her writing and characters are absorbing. Who knew there’d be an Andrew Ryan act-alike in Guatemala?

⭐ The suspects are not who you think they should be. The pace quicken across three continents. The subject matter is timely and comes together at the end. You start with one topic and tie it all together at the end.Fast paced and informative on so many levels. Highly recommend this book. One of the author’s best!

⭐ Good read. Not as good as the others I have read in the sequence. I believe that is primarily because this was set in South America with Spanish in the wording that I was unable to figure out what was being stated.I otherwise really enjoyed this book and I am onto her next one already. I would definately say read this book. Keep her boosk in sequence for Optimium reading pleasure.
