Description
Richly illustrated with the images from observatories on the ground and in space, and computer simulations, this book shows how black holes were discovered, and discusses our current understanding of their role in cosmic evolution. This second edition covers new discoveries made in the past decade, including definitive proof of a black hole at the center of the Milky Way, evidence that the expansion of the Universe is accelerating, and the new appreciation of the connection between black holes and galaxy formation. There are entirely new chapters on gamma-ray bursts and cosmic feedback. Begelman and Rees blend theoretical arguments with observational results to demonstrate how both approaches contributed to this subject. Clear illustrations and photographs reveal the strange and amazing workings of our universe. The engaging style makes this book suitable for introductory undergraduate courses, amateur astronomers, and all readers interested in astronomy and physics.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Review Reviews from the first edition: ‘Martin Rees and Mitchell Begelman are probably the world’s leading authorities in the astrophysics of black holes.’ Stephen W. Hawking’Martin Rees is one of the great astronomers of our generation, and this felicitous collaboration with Mitchell Begelman brings alive a subject replete with wonder and mystery – without losing the hard edge of scientific rigour. An exhilarating read!’ Paul Davies, author of The Mind of God: The Scientific Basis for a Rational World’Martin Rees and Mitchell Begelman have provided us with a dramatic, elegant, and fully authoritative account of [black holes], and how they fit into our modern picture of the Universe.’ Roger Penrose, author of The Emperor’s New Mind’A terrific book, I doubt that you could find a more comprehensive and authoritative popular account of this spectacular subject.’ Marcus Chown, New Scientist’An excellent beginner’s account of the discovery of black holes and their importance in astrophysics today.’ Frank E. Reed, Sky and Telescope’Lavishly illustrated and written with clarity and enthusiasm, this is a spectacular guided tour of our weird and wonderful universe in the safe hands of two of the world’s greatest astrophysicists.’ Dr. Simon Singh, author of Big Bang: The Origins of the Universe”This revised edition, effectively an important new monograph, deserves a place in every science library.” CHOICE Book Description Second edition for introductory undergraduate courses and amateur astronomers on our current understanding of black holes. Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I’m extremely interested in the topic of gravity in regards to physics unfortunately this book was not to my liking at all did not capture my attention enough to even complete reading the book
⭐I am only into the first chapter but can tell that the writing style is excellent. The book assumes you are somewhat familiar with the cosmos and it is not “an easy read,” but again, it is written to be understood. The copyright is 1995, I believe, and you should get the 2nd edition to get the latest information.
⭐A find summary of gravitation. Begelman conveys some of the subtleties of gravitation without burdening the general reader with the heavy weight of mathematics.
⭐Could not wait to get into this book .If this book does not blow your hair back, nothing will.Info in this book will tell you everything you wanted to know and more .You cannot top this book .If you haven’t got it , get it !
⭐It dispells some of the sensationalism associated with black holes and goes into some detail on a subject which needs more research.
⭐Try another book that goes even deeper in only 30 pages. It’s called “Everything About Black Holes” and it explains everything with science. It’s on Amazon.
⭐This is a great book for understanding Gravity in it’s simplest as can be form. It is great for understanding Black holes and Gravity Waves.
⭐Excellent book in time and condtion as mentioned. I like reading it it is very informative. It is good for basic understanding
⭐A very well detailed and understandable book to read, lots of technical information for the would be scientist, well written and the detail of each subject clearly shown, from start to finish. All in all a great book
⭐Excelente libro sobre agujeros negros. No usa formulas matematicas por lo que puede ser leido por cualquier persona intetesada en el tema con buena base cientifica. Algun capitulo es un poco más complicado, pero eso depende de cada uno.
