Description

In olden times when wishing still helped one, there lived a king whose daughters were all beautiful, but the youngest was so beautiful that the sun itself, which has seen so much, was astonished whenever it shone in her face. Close by the King’s castle lay a great dark forest, and under an old lime-tree in the forest was a well, and when the day was very warm, the King’s child went out into the forest and sat down by the side of the cool fountain; and when she was bored she took a golden ball, and threw it up on high and caught it; and this ball was her favorite plaything.

Now it so happened that on one occasion the princess’s golden ball did not fall into the little hand which she was holding up for it, but on to the ground beyond, and rolled straight the water. The King’s daughter followed it with her eyes, but it vanished, and the well was deep, so deep that the bottom could not be seen. At this she began to cry, and cried louder and louder, and could not be comforted. And as she thus lamented, someone said to her: “What ails you, King’s daughter. You weep so that even a stone would show pity.” She looked round to the side from whence the voice came, and saw a frog stretching forth its big, ugly head from the water. “Ah! old water-splasher, is it you?” said she; “I am weeping for my golden ball, which has fallen into the well.”

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ Wow, awesome collection! Warning: These are the real Grimm Fairy Tales, so don’t expect the happy-go-lucky stories of your youth, which is why I wanted to order it. I really wanted to see how time and word of mouth has softened these, originally gruesome, stories. Excellent book, would recommend!

⭐ This paperback is listed next to hardcover and Kindle versions. The latter choices have 672 and 486 pages. The paperback is 126 pages. Others have noted the lack of an index or table of contents or illustrations. The back cover has a random paste of text from a story. The book looks like a stack of stories printed and bound at Kinkos (or whatever your local copy house is). I regret not reading all the details before I made the purchase. To repeat: This paperback is not comparable to the other choices on Amazon’s page. It’s not worth any price. I wish I could leave negative stars for this review.

⭐ I bought this for our local library…the best version out there with wonderful illustrations throughout. For anyone interested in the Grimm’s scholarship, the women who kept the tales alive and how the brothers collected the stories. With an afterword by Joseph Campbell. With this book and Bruno Bettelhiem’s book on faiyrtales and their inner meaning, you’re all set!

⭐ (1) Lo-res images. Terribly ugly. The “look inside” feature above suggests that the images will be color; however, they are black and white. Despite the book being 200 pages long, the pictures disappear after page 44. One image appears twice on neighboring pages.(2) The formatting was obviously not done carefully. There is no table of contents or index. Some titles appear as the last line of a page with the story starting on the back side. The text on the back was copied verbatim from Wikipedia.(3) The dull, matte, black cover material is a magnet for oil. It picked up several blemishes just being removed from the packaging.I would only recommend this version to someone who wants the cheapest choice, period, regardless of physical quality.

⭐ Wonderfully designed and knock out illustrations, to say the least. You get original text and titles, Snow White is titled Snow drop. And it is the complete works. The brothers did change one thing and that’s when you read step mother it was originally mother! It’s definitely more for older children and adults with the way and world children grow up in. Book came quickly and good condition. The price was very good given the new condition. Would purchase from store again

⭐ I ordered this book primarily because I wanted all of Rackham’s illustrations. What a disappointment they are. The pictures are blurry and the colors are all wrong. I’ve seen many of the originals and they are not at all as pictured in this expensive and disappointing book. Additionally, it took weeks and weeks to arrive, even though it said that it was being sent by Amazon.

⭐ Wonderful! Excellent Seller. Perfect Shipping. Attractive dust-jacket. I think this book would be a superb addition to any library! It certainly is for mine!! I was extremely impressed by how well it was wrapped for shipping. The stories themselves are my main reason for buying this. My Sincere Thanks To This Seller!! I will buy from you again! I’m SO very pleased with this book and our transaction! Money Well-Spent!!

⭐ Pretty cover, but…too bad they skimped on the paper quality. The paper is so thin that it is somewhat translucent and the text from the other side shows thru, a bit. A larger, better spaced font would have been nice too. Translation of 1897, so thee & thou type language.

⭐ This Kindle edition is split into two parts: Part I contains all 210 of Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s fairy tales; Part II has their ten children’s legends, which involve religious figures. I could have gotten a free copy of Grimm’s fairy tales, but it only had 25 entries. It was definitely worth it to upgrade to this version, especially since this e-book has an active table of contents. There are also some illustrations, but they are small and it is hard to make out any detail.I still have my old childhood book of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, and one of the surprises in this e-book collection was the number of tales that involved religious figures, e.g. God, Jesus, the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, and the Twelve Apostles. These stories were left out of my original book, and it’s easy to figure out why because Mary and Joseph really come down hard on disobedient little girls: “at last [the lizards and snakes] stung the wicked child to death, and they stung the mother in the foot, because she had not brought her up better.”There are very few mistakes in the text barring an occasional free-floating mystery sentence and some doubling up of the first letter in a story. This book is a definite bargain.

⭐ Anything written by the brothers Grimm is awesome.I love to read these stories and compare them to the Disney versions. Oh, so many differences. This is a great, free download, and I highly recommend it.Stories Inside are:The Goose-GirlThe Little Brother and SisterHansel and GrethelOh, if I could but Shiver!Dummling and the Three FeathersLittle Snow-WhiteCatherine and FrederickThe Valiant Little TailorLittle Red-CapThe Golden GooseBearskinCinderellaFaithful JohnThe Water of LifeThumblingBriar RoseThe Six SwansRapunzelMother HolleThe Frog PrinceThe Travels of Tom ThumbSnow White and Rose RedThe Three Little Men in the WoodRumpelstiltskinLittle One-eye, Two-Eye, and Three-Eyes
