Description

This textbook explains the fundamental concepts and techniques of group theory by making use of language familiar to physicists. Calculation methods in the context of physics are emphasized. New materials drawn from the teaching and research experience of the author are included. The generalized Gel’fand’s method is presented to calculate the matrices of irreducible representations of the simple Lie algebra and its Clebsch-Gordan coefficients. This book is for graduate students and young researchers in physics, especially theoretical physics. It is also for graduate students in theoretical chemistry.

⭐The book by Prof. Ma (China) is one of the best books ever ithas come to my eyes. In general terms, this book covers all thepoints in detail. For example, the chapter on groups and itssubsets is wonderful. He discusses the subsets and the homomorphismof 2 groups. In particular he applies previous concepts to groups Tand O. I really like the treatment of direct product of two groups. Now, the third chapter on theory of linear representation ofgroups is basic in the formation of any theoretical physicist.According to my point of view, the work of Prof. Ma should beconsidered a classic, because it explains better and covers allthe details. I have studied many years ago the book of Tinkhamand have decided to use Ma’s book from now on in my courses. Ma’s book is suitable for postgaduate studies and/or forresearch work.

⭐This is a wonderful book that has a complete material for a first course, with a lot of examples and very nice presentation.

⭐I was very happy to finally see a textbook with a good balance between lie algebras and crystallographic groups, with and introductory chapter on basic stuff, so i bought the book.now i completely regret it. the english is so poor that i have a hard time reading the stuff i know from other texts.example, page one sentence one contains a minor error: “The main mathematical tool in group theory is linear algebraS’ the problem is that as the book goes on, the mixture of chinese-english and obscure terms confounds any chance I had at translating foreign-english into something readable.go with dresselhaus or tinkham or some other book instead.

⭐I borrowed this book and the solution book by the same author from library and read in order to learn how to apply group theory for actual problems in physics. However, there are few examples from physics in this book and even when he presents physical problems they are too abstract and it is hard to see what you should do when you calculate real problems. Furthermore, the index is incomplete and definitions are not written in different fonts so you waste time looking up. I conclude this book is not useful when you tackle physical problems.
