⭐I was involved in a project in Bioinformatics dealing with large DNA sequences. I found this book to provide a complete set of algorithms for exact string matching along with the associated C-code. It has saved me a lot of time searching and implementing algorithms for DNA string matching. However, the C-code provided is far from being optimized. This is probably the job of the interested reader.

⭐Ich baue mir für einen Twitter-Bot gerade eine eigene Java-String-Klasse weil die Standard-String-Klasse vollkommener Schrott ist. Diese Klasse soll natürlich auch effiziente Suchalgorithmen haben. Der Java-Suchalgo kommt im Buch in Kapitel 2 unter “Brute-Force-Algorithm” als Einstieg vor.Das Buch enthält 39 Algorithmen zur exakten String-Suche. Nach einer kurzen Beschreibung der allgemeinen Merkmale und des Konzeptes wirdder Algo mit Hilfe von C-Kode exakt definiert. Es wird an Hand eines durchgehenden Beispiels die Arbeitsweise Schritt für Schritt erklärt. Als Abschluß folgen Literaturhinweise.Besonders hat mir der C-Kode gefallen. Er ist – wie schon ein anderer Reviewer bemerkt hat – nicht der effektivste. Darum geht es auch gar nicht. Kode ist die präziseste Beschreibung eines Algorithmus. Er ist der üblichen Pseudomathematischen Darstellung vorzuziehen. Ich verstehe auch den Kode viel besser als die allgemeine Beschreibung in mathematischer Notation. Als gelernter Mathematiker kann ich mathematische Symbole lesen. Es ist die Sprache der Mathematik jedoch nicht für die Beschreibung der Algorithmen geschaffen worden.Erfrischend finde ich, dass nicht nur die theoretischen Bounds in Form der big-O Notation aufgelistet werden. Sondern auch die praktische Performance. Big-O ist in meinen Augen eine weitgehend nutzloses und manchmal sogar irreführendes Konzept. So hat z.B. der Not-So-Naive-Algorithm eine O(n*m) Komplexität (n ist die Länge des String, m des Patterns). Seine praktische Performance ist sublinear.Es gibt das Buch bzw. die einzelnen Kapitel auch am Internet. Nachdem ich lieber in Büchern lese und der Preis angemessen ist, habe ich mich für dieses Buch entschieden.E’ un testo di non facile lettura,ma soltanto per la complessita’ dell’argomento.
