Description

Hardcore Self Help: F**k Depression is the follow up to the best-selling F**K Anxiety. In this book I take the information, tips, and insights that I have gained as a psychologist and translate them into language that doesn’t suck. This is the self-help book for people that don’t usually like self-help books. In Hardcore Self Help: F**K Depression, I talk to you like a friend. That means I speak directly to you without psychobabble. Instead I tell you why your brain is such a troll. I explain why you have literally no energy or motivation. I tell you why people are so terrible at offering help. Best of all, I tell you how to take realistic steps toward solving these and many other issues caused by depression.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Gave it a 4 star because I can totally see how this could really help some people but it just didn’t do anything for me. By the end of the book, I realized I hadn’t read anything that I didn’t already know BUT I think this would be an awesome book for someone that hasn’t previously read and done research about depression, coping mechanisms, etc. It was still a very enjoyable book for me though. It’s not one of those “oh let me hold your hand. Everything is going to be ok” kind of books which unfortunately seems to be 99% of self help books. It’s actually pretty funny in some areas and I found my self genuinely laughing a couple times. If you are a parent looking for a book to help your child with depression, don’t let the title of this book scare you away from buying it for them. Yes, there are curse words but there is nothing graphic or sexual in it. If you don’t mind your child reading a little bit of swearing, than this book will be just fine. The way it’s written and the language used may actually cause your child or teenager to be more interested in the book because it doesn’t sound like someone lecturing you or a doctor talking to you like a patient. It really is like he’s talking to you as if you’re buddies.

⭐Robert is truly a genuine person and it is quite evident how passionate he is about caring for and helping others. One of the things I have always appreciated about his resources is the approach he takes in presenting them through an authentic, relatable, and genuine manner. His ability to be understanding and relate to others is extremely appreciated as it allows the reader to feel validated and understood in their own personal mental health struggles.I also appreciate the friendly approach Robert displays throughout this book. His ability to talk to his readers like a friend while also displaying a humorous side genuinely shows his strong desire and passion in caring about them and helping them by providing simple explanations about depression and self-help exercises that are easy to understand. Highly recommend his books, podcast, and following him on social media!

⭐I’ll start off by saying that I have not (fully) finished the book. I am on what the Kindle version says is page 119, 81% through the book (I may, therefore, update this if/when I finish it.). However, as Duff says, we have to take the moments we are productive and do with them what we can (I’m paraphrasing here).I have to say that I’m a little disappointed in the book; to be fair, I think I misunderstood its aims a bit. I was hoping for something on the revolutionary side, without too much jargon and in a conversational tone. The latter two are present, but the former, not so much. Much of the information presented here are things that I had already read a long time ago when I self-diagnosed myself and started treatment initially (and I started therapy and medication.) I eventually stopped going to my therapist and have been (poorly) self treating, so I was looking for a book to help me improve my self treatment while I make my way back towards professional treatment.Unfortunately for me, this book is more aimed at people who are new to depression and/or treatment for depression. Some of the exercises were somewhat helpful; nothing extraordinary but, to be fair, probably not something I would have looked up myself. However, I do have some issues with the author. I am very disappointed that someone with a doctorate in clinical psychology found it appropriate to be dismissive of and make jokes about of about trigger warnings in a mental health self help book. You would think he would be more aware of these things, especially considering PTSD and depression are often co-morbid. Also, one of the trigger warning jokes/dismissals is at the start of the chapter on suicide. Disappointing.Overall, however, I think this book has some use as a text for people who want basic information condensed for them in an approachable and un-intimidating format. Otherwise, I would give this one a pass.

⭐I will be honest I usually hate self help books. I used to buy them and check them out from the library and they often contradicted themselves. One book would say one thing and another would give a different opinion. This one is written by a very sincere author who really likes to help people. It is written in very easy to understand language, which is this author’s specialty in his field. He explains very well what goes on in the head of a depressed person and it gives frank advice and good ideas on how to get out of the hole of depression. It is not a quick fix book that you will be disappointed with. It is a book that tells you how to work at getting your depression to a manageable level. Not everyone will find a “cure.” I also like the frank discussion of what happens if you tell your therapist that you feel unsafe. Everyone wonders what it is like to say: “I really need help.” They are afraid of being carted off immediately and drugged in a hospital. This does not happen except in the movies and he explains what will generally happen I the worst case scenario. I was very glad I bought this book.

⭐This book was easy to read. It was in everyday wording and examples. I felt like his explanation of depression to be perfect, and I finally felt like someone else got it. The best line to me was “I’m trying to try”.

⭐Just finished reading this book, as not only have I lived with my mum who suffers for all my life and recently my partner suffered, I also followed after him as I struggled to cope, I bought this book to find out more about depression and how you can help yourself. I felt motivated and smiled alot during the read as the language and context is just a brilliant read, and would read it again when I feel low, it don’t solve all your problems but it gives you a lil boost of positivity that you can do this! 100% recommend.

⭐, this is a really good place to start. seems to explain depression in easy to understand language. The last chapter on turning your battle with depression into a game is the what made this book so successful for me. if you are looking to further your knowledge on depression and makes steps to get it under control i would recommend buying this book.

⭐If you are looking for plain-speaking tools and resources to start to manage your depression, this is a really good place to begin. Dr Duff’s stuff is always accessible and he also explains what depression is in plain language. The chapter on finding a therapist and the different types of therapies is particularly good, but the last chapter on turning your battle with depression into a game is the winner. If you suffer from the double whammy of depression AND anxiety – give his F**k Anxiety a go too 🙂

⭐I’ve had depression for quite a while and this is one of the best things I have come across for self help, it explains all your options to you in a way that is understanding, you can relate so much to it because its in simple terms and basically describes depression for what it truly is. This is a really good starting point if you’re starting to seek help for depression or getting to the point where its getting hard to deal with. Would recommend to anyone with or without depression, such a good read!

⭐This is a really simple language book that anyone can digest. It’s like having a dialog with a person in real life. It won’t cure your issues, but will give you a slap to wake up and do something about your current state. Definitely recommend to anyone suffering depression of any kind.
