Description

Written in Old Norse by the Icelandic poet and historian Snorri Sturluson sometime around 1230 AD, the “Heimskringla” is one of the best known of all sagas. It is in actuality a collection of sagas concerning the various rulers of Norway, from about A.D. 850 to the year A.D. 1177. While scholars and historians continue to debate the historical accuracy of Sturluson’s work, the “Heimskringla” is still considered an important original source for information on the Viking Age, a period which Sturluson covers almost in its entirety. Contained within this work are the following individual sagas: Halfdan the Black Saga, Harald Harfager’s Saga, Hakon the Good’s Saga, Saga of King Harald Grafeld and of Earl Hakon Son of Sigurd, King Olaf Trygvason’s Saga, Saga of Olaf Haraldson (St. Olaf), Saga of Magnus the Good, Saga of Harald Hardrade, Saga of Olaf Kyrre, Magnus Barefoot’s Saga, Saga of Sigurd the Crusader and His Brothers Eystein and Olaf, Saga of Magnus the Blind and of Harald Gille, Saga of Sigurd, Inge, and Eystein, the Sons of Harald, Saga of Hakon Herdebreid (“Hakon the Broad-Shouldered”), and Magnus Erlingson’s Saga.

⭐Beautiful copy, fast shipping

⭐Most of the saga’s are post christian. A lot of good reading though, I like the book.

⭐This is perhaps the very best of all the books I have ever read on the Viking conquests. It is complete with drawings to stir the imagination and fill in the picture.Snorre Sturelson certainly got his details right and provided a smooth transition from king to king.I think any reader will be glad to read the conquests of Saint King Olav and his many travels.I had read this book prior to my very first visit to Norway, hence my visit to the Viking ship museum was more meaningful….to think the span of centuries in a book was right beneath my fingertips in the museum.I really recommend this book for it’s detail, accuracy and the gaps it fills in all my imaginations of that era of history. The Vikings were certainly a vigorous manly force as frightful as they were courageous.

⭐This book is expensive, but if you are interested in the growth of the Norwegian kingdom, I highly recommend it. Being Snorri’s own tales of the Kings of Norway, the book is composed of many short passages detailing the histories of various kings. Being essentially a transcription of minstrelsy related to these kings, the text is narrative, and often has bits of poetry thrown in.The footnotes, editing and translation were all excellently done. The binding is paper, which is a pity, but it’s not cheaply bound and has wide enough margins it may be possible to sew it.

⭐I haven’t been able to read it all yet, but appears a very interesting read. I know scholars have written this book off saying it’s not completely accurate and a lot of the sagas are fiction, but much of it appears to have historical facts. It seems this is the best starting point for those exploring Viking history. All the VIking books I’ve read reference THIS book like it’s the bible of Viking history.

⭐Amazing book that is perfect to read a little bit at a time when you need a break. I carried it with me in college and I would read it when I needed to clear my head. Took me months to read it like that, but so worth it.

⭐This book is not one that summarizes the deeds and victories of heroes and kings of varying import. These are sagas: account for account of actions, locations, people, families and relations. I would not recommend this book for one looking to get a general idea for the history of Norway (and the Viking world); I would recommend it for one like me who wants to engross himself in the history of such a daring and adventurous people. I enjoy it thoroughly.

⭐If you are a student of the Vikings then you have to read Heimskringla. This version was MUCH better than another I had previously purchased on here, and was complete with liner notes, alternate translations, and a very good introduction!!! I learned more about the Vikings reading this one book than I did in all of my School years, and being written in “their own words” really adds a new slant to history and some of their old tales.

⭐Having read an enormous amount of Viking literature and stories my knowledge of all things Viking has grown. This book puts interestingly puts actual historical facts into my reading and has opened up a number of interesting angles that I knew about, but this book gives the specific facts behind that knowledge. Who is whom and why they received their names etc.. Very useful and interesting.

⭐An excellent translation of the Sagas of the Kings of Norway. A must for every viking enthusiast.

⭐Delivered dirty and damaged.

⭐This is the Magnum Opus of the Viking Age. It was written by a Norse Chieftain about the most powerful Viking/Norse leaders of the Viking Age. I am not going to get into the details here but rather I’m going to bemoan the fact that it seems few people realize that this is the great Magnum Opus of the Vikings and that they somehow skip it! If you had only one Viking book on the shelf, it has to be this one! It’s huge, was intended as the Great History of the Vikings, and was written by a great Norse chieftain. If you doubt Snorri the author’s credentials to write the definitive legendary history of the Vikings, well… he politicked his way to become the high chieftain of Iceland, rubbed shoulders with Norse kings throughout his life, and was killed in a Viking raid on his hall.Convinced? If you love the Vikings, you absolutely must have this book! The translator was an absolute devoted genius. He even retains the metre and language tricks of the original Norse poetry in hsi translation. This is the best translation of this work into English ever done!

⭐It was delivered in pristine condition, and contained what was expected, it even including some of Erik Werenskiold’s drawings. All in all a good buy and a must for anyone who is interested in Norse history.
