Some of his philosophical concepts have even caused sharp controversies in the Press (as we will discover in this book).This work presents an original portrait of Henri Poincaré based on various press cuttings from The New York Times, The San Francisco Sunday Call, The Times, The Sun, The Washington Post that chronicled unknown anecdotes of his life (for example, his first name was actually not Henri, but Henry; he obtained his high school diploma in sciences with a zero in mathematics, etc.). Such an approach enables the discovering of many forgotten or unknown aspects of his scientific and philosophical works as well as his important role in the public sphere.

⭐I was considering buying this book and downloaded a Kindle sample. This review tells why I didn’t purchase this book.When I started looking at the sample, I first saw the translator’s note was signed by a student. It appears that the publisher didn’t want to pay for a professional translator, so they went cheap—real cheap—and got a student to do it.Looking at the preface I spotted this gem: “How to rightly translate a biography as multiple as Poincaré’s?” Does this student know how to write English? (Further reading of the preface suggests that English is not her native language.) Moving to the next sentence, the translator apologizes in advance for not being familiar with the subject areas in which Poincaré worked. What does this translator have going for her?Well, let’s skip forward to the first chapter and the first paragraph. It is:”In the ducal town of Nancy is the Hotel Martigny, located at number 2, rue de Guise and at the corner of la Grande Rue. On July 5, 1913, the Alumni Association of Nancy, Metz, Strasbourg and Colmar’s high schools had a plaque affixed on the façade on which one can read this inscription:”Huh? Who is this unnamed Duke and why should we be interested in the Alumni Association? And it’s probably a private residence and not a hotel with a reception desk and guests.Careful reading suggests that purpose of the paragraph is to introduce the plaque, and more importantly the inscription on it honoring Henri Poincaré. Sliding sideways into the real subject like this may work in some French writing, but the translator should have done more to adapt to US English writing style. Let’s try to do that by rearranging what the translator prepared:”On July 5, 1913, a plaque was affixed to the facade of the private residence, Hôtel Martigny, at number 2, rue de Guise on the corner of la Grande Rue in Nancy, the former seat of the Duke of Lorraine, by the high school Alumni Association of Nancy, Metz, Strasbourg and Colmar. The inscription on the plaque says:”There! Isn’t that better? But, you can’t read a book doing that sentence after sentence, paragraph after paragraph, so I didn’t purchase the book.
