Description
Harry Browne believed that a person’s happiness is the highest goal he/she can achieve in life. Freedom comes from living your life as you see fit. Happiness and freedom are attainable even if others remain unfree, and it’s never too late to change your life. “If you’re not free now, it might be because you’ve been preoccupied with people or institutions that have restrained your freedom. I don’t expect you to stop worrying about them, merely because I suggest that you do. I do hope to show you, though, that those people and institutions are relatively powerless to stop you – once you decide how you will achieve your freedom. There are things you can do to be free, and if you turn your attention to those things, no one will stand in your way. But when you become preoccupied with those who are blocking you, you overlook the many alternatives you could use to bypass them. The freedom you seek is already available to you, but it has gone unnoticed.”This book identifies life’s traps – unconscious thinking and habits that prevent people from being free – and explains in a language even a young person can understand how to escape these traps. It helps you navigate through life while being true to your beliefs while obtaining self-reliance, peace, freedom, prosperity, and happiness. Many who have read or listened to this book believe it’s invaluable and should be required for every young person, so they can learn how to be free before others start to rule their life. Some believe it should be a required course in every high school, college, and university. Others believe every adult should try it. Still others claim it’s a must for all who seek freedom. This audiobook is educational and motivational, and even if you disagree with Browne’s philosophy, his logical and consistent thinking can lead you to inner discovery and profound perspectives. How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World is a book for personal liberty – one that can put you on a path to a freer and happier life.

⭐A lot of what’s out there is just a repeat of other books with a thing or two added in. This book is really refreshing in the amount of original content and the power of its ideas. My favorite was his discussion of how to find freedom from social restrictions- I copied and pasted a little of my notes to give you a sense of this book:”Whatever your social standards, the best place to find like minded people is the same place where you would most like to be. If you crave companionship that’s more intellectual, you might try courses in the subjects that have always interested you. And since you could run into potential friends almost anywhere, it’s important to display your standards openly and honestly wherever you are. Only then can others recognize you as a kindred soul. For if you wear a socially acceptable mask, those whom you seek will walk right by you. And those whom you attract with the mask will only add to the pressure that you be something other than yourself. If you make your actions and words consistent with who you are and what you admire, you’ll know which people are compatible- just by their reactions to you. Those who disapprove will seek someone different to be with, and those who have standards similar to your will react favorably toward you. In effect, you let others tell you about themselves through their reactions to what you are.So it’s important to reveal yourself as you really are. If you’re ambitious and show it, people who appreciate ambition are more likely to notice you. If you are careful to respect the property and lives of others and clearly you want the same treatment in return, you’re less likely to wind up with thieving or freeloading friends. When you act as you want to act, you stand a far greater chance of meeting the people who could be valuable to you. When you let others determine your conduct, you acquire nothing but restrictions. Many people hide their identity, tolerate restrictions, and remain in bad relationships because they’re afraid of being lonely. But I wonder what they mean by lonely. Aren’t they very lonely when they deal with people who don’t understand and appreciate them? What you are is the most valuable asset you possess for finding others and the best way to find those people is to advertise your real self and by being honest about who you are.No matter where you go, you never know whether someone you’re seeking might see you. What a shame it would be if that person passed you by because you didn’t reveal the qualities that both you and she admire most.To reveal those qualities, you have to be willing to accept the disapproval of those you aren’t seeking. It takes courage to overcome the embarrassment, self-consciousness, and even ridicule that might result from honest exposure of your nature- but that’s the only way to form the relationships you seek. The kind that are far more rewarding than what you’ve tolerated in the past. The best method of advertising is simply to live the way you want to live. Furthermore, your greatest pleasures will be those you experience when you can be yourself completely. Only then will you be free to enjoy every good thing the experience has to offer you.”Overall, an outstanding book. I feel like an entire weight has been lifted from my shoulders and new clarity brought to my life. That’s what a good book should do for you. Highly recommended.
⭐In 1973, at the then-tender age of 25, I came across this book, “How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World.” Two things happened that had never happened before … or since.First, I can honestly say this book had a major influence on my life, giving me immense satisfaction and confidence at a young age. I won’t say it “changed my life” as I think that phrase is seriously overused, but it was very, very important in helping me understand the world and to cope with it as I came of age.Secondly, I ended up buying about 25 books — an action I have never repeated — and giving them for free to friends. Not everyone commented, but many did and every one of those who did said they felt similarly to me. I’d call that about the strongest endorsement for “How I Found Freedom” that I can possibly state. Now, many years later in life, I obtained a new hardbound copy plus an Kindle eBook version from Amazon and often consult the wisdom in its pages. Although it was written many years ago, it remains cogent, well-written, simple to understand … and remarkably helpful.I believe we do not live in a free world. In fact, I’m concerned the “land of the free and the brave” is no longer either. Yet whatever country you live in has all kinds of restrictions on how you are supposed to live and behave. Harry Browne’s book might, well, “change your life.” You’ll have to judge that but I can honestly report this is one of my treasured possessions, and has been for more than 40 years. I cannot say that about any other book.I met Harry Browne once while he was running for political office. Later, I paid him for a consultation and visited with him by phone for and hour and a half as part of that. The man was impressive in many ways, but most outstanding is his calm, clear and easily-absorbed thinking and writing. I have read many great authors but Harry Browne stands out as one of my genuine heroes, another term I use very sparingly.Beyond “How I Found Freedom” I have read several of Harry Browne’s investment books and have for more than 10 years used his Permanent Portfolio method of investing. It, too, is the very best — and easiest to understand — investment plan I have ever seen. A new book from authors Rowland and Lawson called “the permanent portfolio” describes Harry Browne’s plan in a form that anyone can follow and I recommend it as Harry Browne’s financial wisdom expertly explained in every detail you could want but in a style layman can easily comprehend.I cannot say enough about Harry Browne. Although he died in March of 2006, he remains a giant in my mind and life. I am pleased to own several signed copies of his books including “Fail Safe Investing” and urge all readers to consider this man’s work. Thanks, Harry!
⭐This is a truly awful book. I want my money back.General message: work out what makes you happy (fair enough) and then do whatever you need to get it. Including, in particular, avoiding paying taxes. Unsurprisingly, the “recommended reading” cites “Atlas Shrugged”. That pretty much tells you all you need to know. The author explains, with evident satisfaction, how he divorced his wife and happily gave her sole access to his daughter, whom – at the point of writing – he had not seen for nine years. What a star!Morality (e.g. “be nice to people”) is a trap placed by society. Uh-huh.This isn’t even a sophisticated guide to libertarianism. Readers may wish to start with Nozick’s “Anarchy, State and Utopia” (widely read, widely debunked, but at least it appears on undergraduate political philosophy reading lists).Don’t waste your time with this ham-fisted attempt to sell unconstrained selfishness, disguised as a serious book. It is neither correct, nor is it interesting. Zero stars.
⭐An interesting and well written book on the subject of how to live a self centred life with utter disregard for societal responsibility. The book makes compelling reading for those holding libertarian views and seek useful supporting arguments. My guessess it would receive five stars rating by many libertarians. The author presents his subject in a comprehensive and fully justifiable way those who care about the wellbeing of the less advantaged, it portrays a valuable lesson in how a damaging and disconcerting philosophy can be made justifiable with great conviction. As someone in the latter group, I struggled to read the discomforting elements in parts of this book and have consequently awarded three stars.
⭐It does what it says on the cover. Free your mind, folks!
⭐This book is great. It has so much good advice, that probably most people are scared to say out loud. It also has practical steps. But like with all of these things, you have to take the action yourself. I highly recommend this book. It’s a shame I couldn’t find a paperback anyway, I’d buy this as a gift for birthdays.
⭐GREAT PHILOSPHY ON THE WAY TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE
