User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I borrowed this book for my dad as a grade-schooler and fell in love with it. I went through the whole book. I think it’s probably the best vocabulary book ever written. The cartoons are great and the breadth and sense of humor of the whole book is just priceless.

⭐I bought this book when I was in college many years ago, probably to improve my score on a standardized test. Through this book I fell in love with words. It brought them to life. I learned that many words are simply a combination of easily learned prefixes, suffixes and roots. Knowing a few word components and I could decipher thousands of words that otherwise I would not know. I have bought many copies and given them away. I am back to buy a few more, one for my use and others to pass on. My original copy has become so worn and old the pages are brown and falling out, scribbled with notes and my own neologisms. This book played a part in my deciding to become a lawyer. Buy it even if you hate lawyers! It may change your life in some way also.

⭐I’ve enjoyed many vocabulary books over the years. Some of my favorite are the ones by Wilfred Funk and Norman Lewis. I had high hopes for this book, and so far it’s been interesting and effective. However, I do feel it’s lacking in one crucial area. There are no pronunciation guides for the words. It’s left to the reader to determine the correct pronunciation. This of course can be solved using a dictionary but that seems time consuming and cumbersome when it could’ve been easily added to the book in the first place. Despite this one issue I like the book very much and would still recommend it.

⭐I actually looked up the words in this book online for extra sentences and i did find them being used in the new yorker, ny times, among others so they really aren’t archaic. I just read a newsweek article on “Mr. Bean’s” new movie and when they mentioned “we had to jettison the ….” i knew what they were talking about thanks to this book.I like the way it groups stuff together to allow you to learn the words.I’m a college student who doesn’t have time for lots of things so i needed something that isn’t boring and this books seems to serve the purpose.

⭐This book is a must-have for anyone interested in learning semantics, more important for someone trying to develop a sound vocabulary. This book, unlike other books that teach the tricks of vocabulary building, dwells on providing the history behind the word. In addition to contemporary words, it guides you through words borrowed from other languages, history of words and their usage, and a plethora of words for test preparation (GRE, SAT etc.). I used this for the TOEFL and scored a superlative score. This is also a great read for the linguistically inquisitive. For the price, it’s a steal.

⭐i had been looking for this book for many years. I am so happy.

⭐It’s okay, but it’s more words that have been around for a long time, and I already know them. HOwever, they are set out nicely. I think I was just wanting more contemporary and current words.

⭐I used this book 10 yrs ago, when I was in India, while preparing for GRE. GRE students typically go for the Norman Lewis book which I feel is too thin on substance. This book ( Rosenblum) is fantastic, but may be a lot of archaic words need to be pruned, but hey the book was never written from a GRE test-takers point of view. Great Price.

⭐Amazing book on English vocabulary. I found this book to significantly enhance the way I speak.

⭐Arrived faster than I anticipated. Book as described.

⭐A great reference work for people who want to build an impressive vocabulary. The presentation is good, and logical, and I use it every day.

⭐Highly recommend it if you are studying English or just want to boost your vocabulary

⭐A very thorough book…
