User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “Hypnosis is the ‘mother’ of psychotherapy. Pintar and Lynn have done a great service to the field. Hypnosis: A Brief History is a comprehensive, well-organized academic treatise that surveys the development of hypnosis from its birth to its contemporary maturity. Destined to be a classic, it is a welcome addition to the library of students of hypnosis.” –Jeffrey K. Zeig, Ph.D., The Milton H. Erickson Foundation “The fascination of hypnosis, the shifts in its use and understanding over time, and the importance of scientific and societal influence are all captured in this engaging and accessible book. The intrigue of hypnosis and the passion of those who seek to understand it are hallmarks of this brief history.” –Kevin M. McConkey, The University of Newcastle, Australia”Pintar & Lynn’s book is simply superb. In one convenient package, truths about hypnosis are revealed and myths are exposed. Readers come to understand how hypnosis is useful for treating pain, anxiety, and other medical and psychological conditions. But, we also learn, it can be dangerous in the hands of incompetent or unknowledgable practitioners, especially when it leads to the production of pseudomemories. The winding and complicated history of the study of hypnosis is not only fascinating in its own right, but it serves as a starting point for glimpsing the future of this captivating phenomenon.” –Elizabeth Loftus, University of California, Irvine From the Inside Flap “Hypnosis is the ‘mother’ of psychotherapy. Theories about hypnosis, as well as popular ideas about its nature, have been repeatedly champoined, rejected, —and revived-and in the process have continuously contradicted, influenced, and fed back into one another. ⭐They cite their sources and put a lot of effort into getting the story straight.

⭐This is a nice easy read, which covers a lot of ground.

⭐This is a very good all round resource for anyone intersted in the history of hypnosis. I bought this book along with another called “Hidden Depths” which is also a very thorough investigation into the long and colourful history of hypnosis. I probably enjoyed the latter book more although it does go on a bit in the middle!! I particularly liked the profile given of Mesmer in the latter book. Mesmer was obviously a bit of a crank but a gifted, and clever man, too. I wish I had hundrens of people lining up round the block waiting to hang on to an oak tree in my garden to be cured of their difficulties while I sat with my feet up checking my bank balance. We need another Mesmer today! I mean what man could devise a cure by getting people to sit in a bath while he sat there with one leg in and one leg out wearing some sort of magicians cloak? I think the laughter would have been enough to cure them! Yet no matter how many setbacks this man got, and there were many, or how many times he was rebuffed he came back so that the whole crazy thing took off again. Animal magnitism that’s what he called it not hypnosis. I guess it was his answer to Ether. Mesmer maintained that the reason people became sick was because the animal magnitism running through them was out of kilter. His remedy was to run his hands over their body (not actually touching them)to remagnatise them!! What? Yet people swooned, cried out, fell at his feet and went into convulsions. A bit like when I get my council tax bill. Anyway Mesmer couldn’t prove animal magnatism of course he couldn’t but it worked just as the tablets doctors give to patients work!! It wouldn’t surprise me if much of the medicine prescribed today isn’t a placebo! But, and this is the secret of hypnosis, if you believe in something strongly enough it will work. Look into my eyes!
