Description

Ideas can, and do, change the world. Just as Marxism, existentialism, and feminism shaped the last century, so fundamentalism, globalization, and bioethics are transforming our world now. In Ideas that Matter, renowned philosopher A.C. Grayling provides a personal dictionary of the ideas that will shape our world in the decades to come. With customary wit, fire, and erudition, Grayling ranges across the gamut of essential theories, movements, and philosophies — from animal rights to neurophilosophy to war crimes — provoking and elucidating throughout. Ideas are the cogs that drive history, and in explaining the most complex and influential ones in laymen’s terms, Ideas that Matter will help every engaged citizen better understand it.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This compendium of ideas is valuable for anyone interested in the ideas that shaped the recent past in the world. Some of the ideas have their origins in ancient history, like Judaism and Daoism, and others, like neuroscience, the study of the brain, is a product of only a few decades ago. The author, Dr. Grayling, says that he selected these ideas because of their intrinsic significance. He hopes that this selection, which includes important ideas in science and the natural world as well as ideas in the humanities and cultural studies, will help close the gap between those specialties. Much in science today is incomprehensible to the layman; people need to know how to close the gaps between science and the humanities. Dr. Grayling’s Ideas should be on the desk of anyone engaged in such an endeavor.

⭐This comprehensive book on ideas is a must read for anyone interested in the world of ideas and concepts. With his near perfect command of the English language and clear prose style it’s a joy to read and be educated. The section on vegitarianism is hilarious and worth the price of admission by itself.

⭐Interesting book. Format took some getting used to. Author’s anti Christian bias could have been a bit more subtle.

⭐Great book about the important concepts that we deal with in our everyday lives. Well written, incisive and educational. Well recommended to anyone with the intellectual curiosity to increase their knowledge of the world.

⭐An absolutely necessary book for anyone who thinks. One may disagree with some conclusions, but the ideas are presented clearly, logically, and rarely show bias. This is probably one of the most engaging and useful books I have read this year.

⭐It’s a good book. It shapes everything that the 21st century revolves around and how society is viewed by certain people. My grandson enjoyed reading it.

⭐Great for reviewing and testing your knowledge, or for a high school or freshman history class. Book is a collection of short articles that are articulate and unbiased.

⭐I purchased this book for a class I was taking. Was a very helpful study guide and easy to read and understand.

⭐This is an interesting and entertaining review of many of the important ideas and beliefs that shape today’s world. The author bases his book on the “two cultures” debate, originating from the(1959)Rede lecture by C P Snow and the thesis therein is just as relevant today as it was 50+ years ago. The theme therefore is that we should all be adequately informed about the huge range of knowledge that extends far beyond our own specializations, whatever they may be. Grayling does not avoid his personal prejudices and so humour appears in unexpected places, no doubt not to everyones’ liking! Read in small doses and enjoy!
