Description

Originally published in 1969. This book explains what is wrong with the traditional methodology of “inductive” reasoning and shows that the alternative scheme of reasoning associated with Whewell, Pierce and Popper can give the scientist a useful insight into the way he thinks.

⭐We are lucky that Medawar took the time to write out in this book his thoughts on the doing of science. There are some books of popular science written by practicing scientists, but I haven’t seen another book by a scientist on the philosophy of scientific practice. This book is three lectures that Medawar gave for the American Philosophical Society in 1968. The first, “The Problem Stated”, asks “What is the scientific method?” and poses the problem that scientists don’t pay serious attention to the answer. The second lecture is “Mainly About Induction”, and the third lecture is “Mainly About Intuition”. In the second lecture he criticizes the traditional inductive view of scientific method, and opposes the view that “That which leads us to form an opinion is also that which justifies our holding the opinion” (p. 25). I think that generally it is true that getting an idea and then justifying it are separate processes, but sometimes and perhaps often justifying a proposition is just elaborating on the inspiration that led to it.Three methodologists to whom Medawar refers approvingly are Claude Bernard, who had been a practicing biologist, William Whewell, and Karl Popper. Of course I’ve heard of Karl Popper, though I haven’t read his works, but Bernard and Whewell are new to me and I’m going to look at the works of theirs to which Medawar refers.
