⭐One of the first things that a student of abstract algebra notices is that abelian groups are far nicer than non-abelian groups. Indeed, the fundamental theorem of finite abelian groups is a complete classification of the finite abelian groups. If one wants to study group theory further, but also wants to remain in the domain of abelian groups, Fuchs’ book is a superb reference. It starts with an introduction to the more sophisticated mathematical language used to study infinite abelian groups, such as commutative diagrams, modules, and the minimum of category theory necessary. The book then covers pretty much every imaginable topic concerning infinite abelian groups in painstaking detail. Sections I found particularly interesting include the structure theorem for divisible groups, groups of extensions, and the endomorphism rings. All in all, I highly recommend this book to anyone wishing to further their knowledge of infinite group theory.
