Description

U.S. relations with Iran have been fraught for decades, but under the Trump Administration tensions are rising to startling levels. Medea Benjamin, one of the best-known 21st century activists, offers the incredible history of how a probable alliance became a bitter antagonism in this accessible and fascinating story. In 1979, the Iranian Revolution brought a full-scale theocracy to the 80 million inhabitants of the Middle East’s second largest country, with. The rule of the ayatollahs opened the door to Islamic fundamentalism. In the decades since, bitter relations have persisted between the U.S. and Iran. Yet how is it that Iran has become the primary target of American antagonism over nations like Saudi Arabia, whose appalling human rights violations fail to depose it as one of America’s closest allies in the Middle East? In the first general-audience book on the subject, Medea Benjamin elucidates the mystery behind this complex relationship, recounting the country’s history from the pre-colonial period to its emergence as the one nation Democrats and Republicans alike can unite in denouncing. Benjamin has traveled several times to Iran, and uses her firsthand experiences with politicians, activists, and everyday citizens to provide a deeper understanding of the complexities of Iranian society. Tackling common misconceptions about Iran’s system of government, its religiosity, and its citizens’ way of life, Benjamin makes short work of the inflammatory rhetoric surrounding U.S.-Iranian relations, and presents a realistic and hopeful case for the two nations’ future.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐As I started reading this book, I did not know what to expect but I did tell myself that if this book takes a negative angle, it will be a wake-up call for most of us who are on the frontlines trying to form alliances with people irrespective of faith in order to achieve common goals and fight against oppression. Needless to say, I am not disappointed. The book is a chronological history of Iran starting from 1925 till present day. It talks about how the West is deluded to believe that Iran under the Shah’s regime was progressively liberal when, in actuality, it was a dictatorship. It talks about the Islamic revolution and does touch on the struggles the country is facing domestically. However, the book ends with making it clear that despite all odds and heavy sanctions, the Islamic government in Iran is working and has continued to work. The book hits hard on the US-Saudi alliance and specifies that the only issue that the US has with Iran is due to Saudi, the one country responsible for every single terrorist attack in the US and the country that the US has an arms deal with of $110 billion.Overall, it is well written and presents a realistic depiction of the world affairs in the Middle East and how the US foreign policy shapes that.

⭐Before I found this book, I had a difficult time finding reliable, unbiased information on Iran and its international relations. This book was a very comprehensive and rather unbiased source for the most part. Not only does it provide a great deal of information about Iran and its history, it also allows readers to gain a greater understanding of how Iran is perceived by the rest of the world as well as how Iran perceives the rest of the world. I would certainly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to better understand Iran’s standing in the world.

⭐Truly an outstanding book packed with insightful information and interesting reading. The quick history and politics of Iran, which is considerable, brings the current conflict with Iran into a realistic focus with a better understanding of where the US went off track in working with Iran. Iran has a rich history and has much to offer the world. We need to stop being the aggressor and build on a better relationship with Iran through rebuilding the trust lost long ago. #NoMoreWar.

⭐Ms. Benjamin gives a more complete picture of the complexities of Iranian society. I came away with a appreciation for the kindness and generosity of the average Iranian who has to continue to live under a repressive government and the threat of a U.S. invasion. They deserve peace

⭐I don’t think Amazon wants new knocking this book as I already wrote a review, but they didn’t post it. Very bias book. If you can get past that it’s ok. I would not of bought it and believe author should change title to my onion in the history of Iran.

⭐Excellent overview of the history and culture of Iran.

⭐One of the truly in-depth fare discussion regarding Iran bumps bruises and positives. Portraying this governments polices and actions up to and including Donald Trumps.

⭐important to read to get info you need to help stop another war

⭐The book gives us a great summary of the Iran before – after the revolution, explaining the important factors etc.

⭐The book in itself is a decent work that tries to explain Iran in a way that is more objective than most media accounts. Its style is maybe too journalistic and little analytical. It must be read as an introduction to Iran, it does not delve deeper but this isn’t the intention of the book either. A bit disappointing if you have read “Drone Warfare”, a marvellous book by the same author.
