Description
In the words of Bertrand Russell, “Because language is misleading, as well as because it is diffuse and inexact when applied to logic (for which it was never intended), logical symbolism is absolutely necessary to any exact or thorough treatment of mathematical philosophy.” That assertion underlies this book, a seminal work in the field for more than 70 years. In it, Russell offers a nontechnical, undogmatic account of his philosophical criticism as it relates to arithmetic and logic. Rather than an exhaustive treatment, however, the influential philosopher and mathematician focuses on certain issues of mathematical logic that, to his mind, invalidated much traditional and contemporary philosophy. In dealing with such topics as number, order, relations, limits and continuity, propositional functions, descriptions, and classes, Russell writes in a clear, accessible manner, requiring neither a knowledge of mathematics nor an aptitude for mathematical symbolism. The result is a thought-provoking excursion into the fascinating realm where mathematics and philosophy meet — a philosophical classic that will be welcomed by any thinking person interested in this crucial area of modern thought.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐It’s a peice of Intellectual History……..it’s always a pleasure to be able to read a book like this………..having a great mind talk directly to you…..
⭐I think this is a sort of popularization of his Principia Mathematica. Lots about set theory, basis of natural numbers, mathematical logic, Cantor’s theorems of transfinite numbers, etc.. He was a very good communicator of ideas, and could write at a specialist level or a popular level. This book doesn’t use formal symbolic logic, but explains rather complicated things in narrative form, as much as that is possible. Interesting to read, even if somewhat dated.
⭐Logic, mathematics and reasoning examined thoroughly. This is a wonderful read that will expand your mind to accept that logic and mathematics not only isn’t confined to vocabulary or definitions of words but rather is based on deductions, inferences and reasoning based on logical axioms. Highly recommend this book and will definitely seek out more Bertrand Russell works because I read this book and was so impressed by it and by the writer.
⭐This book is an old friend. As an undergraduate philosophy student I picked up a copy at my campus bookstore and read it through almost immediately. I had never conceived of someone defining what a number was. I learned about logical treatments of complex numbers and reals in a way that made them intelligible rather than just articles of faith. The book’s system is early Russell but rewards attention to his treatment of relation-numbers and type theory.
⭐Sitting on his logic expertise, Russell tries to educate us on fundamental concepts of mathematics. The whole thing sounds like a talk trying to reach layperson using several analogies (he insults philosophers making logical mistakes as well) or to motivate young students. The highest point is a construction stating that is nonsense discuss the existence of god. Warning: You may fall in love with Mathematics!
⭐Interesting. Not quite sold on a couple of premises. Maybe I am overlooking something. Definitely worth a try to read.
⭐If you like this ,you’ll love Principia
⭐This book takes you back one or two steps in the understanding of math when definitions in the modern age just doesn’t seem to define with clarity most concepts of math. This book takes you to a world of propositional logic that is of utter importance to grow as a mathematician. Bertrand Russell is one of a kind, you can easily see why he got a Nobel Prize in Literature. This book must be read slowly as to digest the concepts so that you can internalize them and put them to use in proofs in the modern way. Enjoy!!
⭐I always find it quite exciting to go back to the time when you get to learn from the original thinkers in a certain area. Russell’s explanation of how you can completely strip mathematics to basic principles and axioms to form complex numerical systems and relations is fantastic. It’s well written, easy to understand and makes a somewhat dry topic rather interesting.
⭐Subject of extremly interesting, well written and very clear even for a passionate novice.
⭐Did you read the product description?”This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text.”The first sentence should be enough to change your mind. In case it doesn’t , let me make it clear: It has a typo in every other paragaph.”We scanned this book using a character recognition software that includes an automated spell check. Our softare is 99% accurate if the book is in good condition.”I’m only guessing this book was in extremely bad condition when they scanned it. As if that were not enough, the publisher’s note in the book also mentions that it might have missing images and indexes too. And the page layout and alignment is honestly ridiculous (each page has three columns) and their character recognition software is a disaster; NONE of the mathematical signs are printed properly. Not even the plusses and minuses. The italicized ‘n’ is replaced by “<<" or ">>” for some reason. Zero is written as “o” and 1 becomes “I” or “i” depending on which page you are on. This is pushing the definiton of what can be legallly called a “book”. WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU PUT SUCH A MEDIOCRE PRODUCT FOR SALE? And what is with the cover picture? No, seriously, what is with that?”We would like to maually proof read and fix the typos and indexes, manually scan and add any illustrations, and track down another copy of the book to add any missing text. But our books sell so few copies, you would have to pay up to a thousand dollars for the book as a result.”ORLY? General Books LLC, here’s a piece of advice. Have some integrity. Take your job seriously. I am sure there are a lot of rich people out there who won’t mind paying up for a good book. I won’t be ordering a book published by you for the rest of my life but don’t let that demotivate you.
⭐The book was clearly typeset with LaTeX, thus making its horrendous typesetting even more egregious of an offence. The words are too large and jumps out at you. The layout is both bland and uncomfortable to read. The margins are way too small, and for some inexplicable reason the inner margins are of the same size as the outer margins, resulting in words being scrunched together near the gutter. At least the paper is nice.
⭐This version of the book is full of errors and bad layout. No one has proofread this obviously copy-pasted text. Do not buy this version.
