Description
This book introduces particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. Starting from an experimental perspective, it provides a unified view of these fields that reflects the very rapid advances being made. This new edition has a number of improvements and has been updated to describe the recent discovery of gravitational waves and astrophysical neutrinos, which started the new era of multimessenger astrophysics; it also includes new results on the Higgs particle. Astroparticle and particle physics share a common problem: we still don’t have a description of the main ingredients of the Universe from the point of view of its energy budget. Addressing these fascinating issues, and offering a balanced introduction to particle and astroparticle physics that requires only a basic understanding of quantum and classical physics, this book is a valuable resource, particularly for advanced undergraduate students and for those embarking on graduate courses. It includes exercises that offer readers practical insights. It can be used equally well as a self-study book, a reference and a textbook.

⭐This book is just right for me and I’d happily recommend it to others who have a reasonably good background in science. I’m an amateur astronomer with a pretty good background in science, technology, and math (BS in computer science) but I do not have a graduate degree in physics. I just received this book and I’m very happy with the content. I buy and read a lot of books about Astronomy, Math, or Physics, etc., and I find it’s hard to get a book that’s just right. If it’s a popular book, it’s usually not technical enough. If it’s a graduate physics textbook, it can be overwhelmingly technical. I want technical information and I want to see the mathematics, but I also want explanations and ideas. It’s hard to find books with this balance, but this book is definitely in the Goldilocks zone for me. Most amateur astronomers or physics buffs will enjoy this book. It has a wealth of charts, graphs, photos, diagrams, etc., many in color which I was very happy to see. Many textbooks cost far too much, but this one seems reasonable and is definitely a good addition to my library. It is comprehensive and up-to-date, as of 2019 with a nice blend of historical background, technical content, explanatory text, and, as mentioned, visual content.
⭐Highly recommended.Excellent review or reference text with historical astroparticle data (up to date as of June 2018).Contains good backgrounders on particle physics, dark matter, dark energy, gravitational waves, high energy photons and neutrinos.A word of caution: this is the second edition in two years. As such, there are many errors and typos which, in a small number of cases, could change the meaning of a statement, formula or paragraph. The publisher has provided an errata web page (http:/ipap.uniud.it) but, as of date of this review no errata were recorded here.
