Description

This invaluable book provides a quick introduction to the rudiments of perturbative string theory and a detailed introduction to the more current topic of D-brane dynamics. The presentation is very pedagogical, with much of the technical detail streamlined. The rapid but highly coherent introduction to the subject is perhaps what distinguishes this book from other string theory or D-brane books. This second edition includes an additional appendix with solutions to the exercises, thus expanding on some of the technical material and making the book more appealing for use in lecture courses. The material is based on mini-courses in theoretical high energy physics delivered by the author at various summer schools, so its actual level has been appropriately tested.

⭐After going through several books on string theory like Polchinski (very bad), Zwiebach (very good), McMahon (very good), Green, Schwarz & Witten (Brilliant!), Dine (Horrible!), Johnson (ok), Becker, Becker and Schwarz (good) and Kiritsis (Only helps final chapter 16 on Matrix models) I pick up this book of Richard Szabo and it really surprised me a lot, some of its good features:1- It is thin, each chapter is short and to the point and it only bring 8 chapters in total.2-Reading through it, is very easy, I completed it in just two days.3-It offers hints on things I had not previously realized.4-The explanations are good and it practically does not leave any loose ends.5-It is the best treatment of D-branes I have encountered until now.6-It brings answers to all exercises that he presents in the text, these are specially useful for the topics about the Born-Infeld and Dirac-Born-Infeld actions. It also shows how Matrix Theory appears from the actions cited above, he makes no attempt at discussing the Heterotic strings, he just focuses on Type II (A and B) and on open strings, he does not discuss S-duality, nor U-duality or the AdS/CFT correspondence but he gives a good discussion of T-duality and how through it you can go from Type II A to Type II B theories. What I really liked most was the fact that through T-duality you can see a new winding number of the open string around different branes and that in the case this winding number is zero it then implies that the open string begins and ends on the same brane and has no tension or mass, also, if two or more branes coincide then the state are massless. Also, I learn here that the gauge fields (abelian and non-abelian) live inside the branes in their world volumes and perpendicular to the branes live scalar fields which tell you how the branes fluctuate, all in all, a lucid, well written text that will help sharp your understanding of this wonderful theoretical physics subject, excellent!

⭐very good book
