Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I read this book after reading Teach Yourself Java in 21 days. I have always found the Dummies books easy and fun to read. After reading the Teach Yourself book there were a lot things that I just didn’t quite understand, but this book clear things up. I am still not sure what planet the person that created Java was from. Unlike other programming languages that I have studied Java has so many ways of doing things that you almost need a safari guide even after you understand the the whole class/object thing. The one thing I am still not sure about is the constructor thing. But since Burd states that Java is not used that much anymore and there are other languages that are more popular, I am interested in finding out more about those. In the mean time I have gone back to C and C++. Although, Netbeans is a great IDE.
⭐I’m astonished that this book is getting positive reviews. I took an Intro. to Java course at my local university last spring (received an “A” as well, even though I’d never programmed anything but a VCR before the course). I decided this spring to take Java 2, the next level. Wanting to brush up on my Java, I decided to read “Java 2 for Dummies”.Talk about convoluted! This book is actually making me more confused, rather than refreshing my memory on everything I’d learned last year (I’m only halfway through, but I don’t think I’m going to waste any more time on it). The author launches ahead into various aspects of Java code without explaining much of it, what it does, or why you have to use it. Nor does he take the time to explain formatting conventions. One gets the feeling of being rushed through the topics, with the author’s attitude being “Just type the gobbledygook you see here and your program will work. Never mind what it means or why it’s necessary.”Object-oriented programming requires a great deal of careful, detailed explanation so that the student fully grasps the concepts before being shown how to utilize those concepts. Otherwise, you’re just parroting back code you’ve been shown, without grasping how everything is working.I usually enjoy the Dummies books for what they’re worth, but this is by far the most inadequate one I’ve read. If you’re new to programming, don’t even think you’re going to learn Java by reading this book. You’ll need to read several other books just to “unlearn” the confusion this book is likely to leave you with and also to fill in the enormous gaps it leaves in your brain. If you’re an experienced programmer looking to learn Java, this is not the place to start. Like the title of my review says, this book is too advanced and lacking in details for beginners, but too simplistic and meandering for those familiar with programming concepts.Stay away!
⭐Was good for what it was.
⭐I bought this book for my 14 year old son. He had little computer knowledge beyond playing games. He has used this book as a resource after working through the first couple chapters and now has a very basic understanding of Java. (he has only had the book one month. It has motivated him to try to understand what he is really doing at the computer and given him an interest in its workings. If he was going to spend so much time at the computer, I wanted some learning going on.
⭐This is great book for beginners, and you have to get other one to get to intermediate level. Read it before you get some theoretical book like Eckel’s. Good for people who already have idea about what is class, object etc.
⭐Didn’t work for me. The examples were ok but explaining the theory was not clear enough for me… unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find any better book out there…. many on the same level as this but nothing that explains it simplistically.
⭐The book itself is a little disappointing, and is reasonably adequate for beginners, but that’s not the sellers fault.Delivery was fast. Thank you.
⭐I’m a college student working on a programming degree and I will say that this book is EXCELLENT!!! Featuring an easy to follow no non-sense format, I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn Java without the complicated text book aspect!!!
⭐I love this book, I still have it, very useful, I do recommend
