Description

This easy-to-follow textbook teaches Java programming from first principles, as well as covering design and testing methodologies. The text is divided into two parts. Each part supports a one-semester module, the first part addressing fundamental programming concepts, and the second part building on this foundation, teaching the skills required to develop more advanced applications. This fully updated and greatly enhanced fourth edition covers the key developments introduced in Java 8, including material on JavaFX, lambda expressions and the Stream API.Topics and features: begins by introducing fundamental programming concepts such as declaration of variables, control structures, methods and arrays; goes on to cover the fundamental object-oriented concepts of classes and objects, inheritance and polymorphism; uses JavaFX throughout for constructing event-driven graphical interfaces; includes advanced topics such as interfaces and lambda expressions, generics, collection classes and exceptions; explains file-handling techniques, packages, multi-threaded programs, socket programming, remote database access and processing collections using streams; includes self-test questions and programming exercises at the end of each chapter, as well as two illuminating case studies; provides additional resources at its associated website (simply go to springer.com and search for “Java in Two Semesters”), including a guide on how to install and use the NetBeans™ Java IDE.Offering a gentle introduction to the field, assuming no prior knowledge of the subject, Java in Two Semesters is the ideal companion to undergraduate modules in software development or programming.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought this book as I am studying for a MSc in Computer Science and it is the University’s recommended reading. I do like the writing style which I find easy to understand but still moves forward at a quick pace. There are exercises at the end of each chapter to reinforce learning which are great. This is a useful and comprehensive introductory book but make no mistake that you will need to invest considerable time and effort into studying the subject to make progress especially if you have no prior experience. There are two points , personal to me, that prevented me from giving the book 5 stars:1. I have a preference for soft back textbooks so that when I open a page I can fold the book over to ensure that the page remains open. I did not realise I had ordered a hard copy. I need to either hold the book open or to place a weighty object on it to keep it open otherwise it closes. This is to me a bit awkward when trying to refer to the book at the same time as using a computer.2. The code examples illustrated throughout the book are written in a tiny font which I find difficult to read without either removing my eye glasses or moving the book close to my face. This is a more serious flaw which I have never observed in any book on programming before. To compensate, there is a companion website which allows you to download the example source code. I was able to download it to my phone.Overall, I don’t regret buying this book though would have preferred the paper back version. The content covers all of the basics that an introduction to Java should include and once covered should enable the reader to move on confidently to further learning and practical use of the skills developed.

⭐It’s a nice book but it is supposed to come with an accompanying website. There is a link on page vii, typed it and all I got was the book’s springer website that advertises the book but there is nothing to download. also there are exercises etc but there are no solutions ( which misses the point).Other than that, good quality book so one or two stars would be a bit unfair

⭐Used this as text book for University of Oxford Java course. Covered syllabus well and explanations reasonably good.

⭐Bought to support an MSc – definitely recommended. Exle sive but worth it.

⭐I bought a kindle version.Very easy to read and follow, and can be a great book for those with little programming experience.Highly recommend.
