Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐If the title had paralleled the contents I would have given this book a five-star. It is a very good review of the history of jazz. It does little or nothing to teach the reader about jazz itself.WAY too much time was spent telling you what was going to be covered in the next section and about what was covered in a previous section than was necessary. One quickly learns to just skip those paragraphs.
⭐A very good overview of the subject and main players.
⭐I bought this as a gift for a friend. They complained they did not know much about Jazz so I bought this as something funny to give them. Though I did peek through the book before hand to see what it was like and it turned out to be very informative. It reminded me of a few things I had forgotten about that i had studied in college. This book is useful for both a novice enjoyer of Jazz and more veteran listener/musicians.
⭐I’d borrowed a different edition from my local library, and I’d hoped that I was getting the same edition. The library copy included a CD with select Jazz compositions. Yes, I am sorely disappointed!
⭐I don’t intend to become a jazz player, but I am curious about the underlying layers of this fascinating style of music. This book has not only driven me to a deeper understanding of the origins and of technical aspects of the jazz, but has indeed provided me with a better appreciation of it.After reading this book I just want more jazz!
⭐This book was assigned for a college class I took, but it is a great overview of Jazz for anyone interested.
⭐It seems to have everything one would need as a reference to know all about Jazz. What you always wanted to know about Jazz!
⭐Flicking through this book I was struck by how US-centric it is. Perhaps it needs to be retitled – US Jazz for Dummies. The only references to other countries is coincidental while referencing a US Jazz musician and their is almost nothing about foreign Jazz artist. The section on Ten Great Cities for Jazz has only US cities, apparently Paris, London, Berlin, Tokyo don’t exist. Not worth the money.
⭐I enjoyed reading this book and found it imformative, having just starting exploring jazz music. It is easy to read but can be repetative, as it assumes that a reader may dip into particular chapters, whereas I read it cover to cover. It covers the broad history of jazz and seems to include all the major players. There are a couple of unexpected but interesting sections including how to sus out a jazz gig and advice on setting up a jazz band. Also some really weird ones, including how to hold a jazz dinner party and talking jazz to your pretentious friends! It doesn’t include much on music theory. There is a section on the blues, which I found confusing eventhough I can play the blues and have studied music. It was published in 2006, so is out of date regarding current musicians/developments and it is focused on USA (for obvious reasons). But is a useful broad introduction to the development of jazz through the 20th century.
⭐Said what it did on the cover! Some great ideas to get a basic fondation in Jazz. i would recommend with out a thought
⭐Exactly right, right price and bang on time – excellent service
⭐This is a good starter for anyone who wants to know the basic theory of jazz.
