Description

Bhante Gunaratana – Bhante G., as he is affectionately called – has long been among the most beloved Buddhist teachers in the West. Ordained at twelve, he would eventually become the first Buddhist chaplain at an American university, the founder of a retreat center and monastery, and a bestselling author. Here, Bhante G. lays bare the often-surprising ups and downs of his seventy-five years, from his boyhood in Sri Lanka to his decades of sharing the insights of the Buddha, telling his story with the “plain-English” approach for which he is so renowned.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I’ve read a few of his other books and I highly recommend them. This book is a little different because this is his life story. If you’re expecting him to simply be born as the great monk we see today you may be dismayed in the first part of the book. That’s just not how anybody’s life works. The Bhante G we know today develops over the course of his life and the pages of the book. The other aspect that may be difficult is the unexpected ways people behaved even when they should know better. It’s not until later that you start to understand that for almost his whole life he was at friction with some of the other members of his community because they saw Buddhism mainly just as a way to solidify their culture and saw him as a try-hard who was wasting his effort spreading the Dhamma to the wider world. Those aspects can be hard at first but there’s similar dynamics in all communities and everyone grows through out their life. He was successful in breaking the chains that held him down and brought the Dhamma to America for which I’m very grateful. It could have ended so many times in so many ways but it didn’t. Reading this gave me a greater appreciation for his work.

⭐Bhante Gunaratana’s books have lighted the path of Dhamma for me. That is the greatest gift. This story of Bhante G’s life history is both inspiring and enjoyable to read. The stories kept me turning the pages. They evoked smiles and tears. And the humble, hard-won wisdom gently demands reflection. Journey to Mindfulness is a masterful work telling the stories of a beautiful man’s life. Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

⭐I’ve read this book and, as would be expected from an auto-biography, it’s a history of this man’s life. His basic Buddhist teaching is in other books (such as Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, Mindfulness in Plain English, and Beyond Mindfulness in Plain English); this one is just what happened with some thoughts from the author about various events. One thing that’s clear from it is that any large organization has ‘lifers’ who are primarily there for what they can get out of it and they simply don’t really live up to the tenets of the organization. This book is useful to read altho hardly necessary for understanding his other books. It’s a slice of life book and succeeds at that. I liked it and am glad I read it.

⭐Really enjoyed reading his story, and seeing the “human” side to a person that I admire (realizing that even monks with years of practice still have to continue battling the defilements/hindrances that us laypeople regularly contend with). “Mindfulness in plain english” is the first book I read to really explain things clearly/pragmatically, and is the one I credit with starting my meditation journey. I’ve recommended it to many people, and will continue to do so. I will do the same for the autobiography.

⭐Fantastic story. Incredible man. Wonderful book. If you are at all interested in Theravada Buddhism, you will not be able to put this down. This man is still alive and still travels and lectures, even though he is well into his 90s. If you get a chance to hear him speak, don’t miss it.

⭐Thank you Bhante for sharing your journey with us ..

⭐I have enjoyed all of Bhante Gunaratana’s books and it was great to have some insight into his life and what formed him. One of the more interesting autobiographies of a Bhikkhu I have read.

⭐After reading and re-reading “Mindfulness in Plain English” by Bhante G., I wanted to learn a bit more about him. Usually books will cause me to fall asleep, but this one I could not put down! His style of writing, his humor and his honesty regarding everything was a WONDERFUL read! I encourage you all to read this and the “Mindfulness in Plain English” also!

⭐Bhante G is frank about his early life as a monk and gives an insight into the problems a monk had to face.Along the way, he also introduces the fundamental teachings of the Buddha.Very good reading

⭐Una storia vera di una persona verissima che mi sarebbe piaciuto conoscere! Da leggere assolutamente anche il suo manuale sulla mindfulness!

⭐An insightful autobiography from a great teacher.

⭐英語はそれほど難しくありません。上座部仏教の瞑想についても勉強もできます。どちらにも興味がある方には一石二鳥の本です。
