⭐This book, written in 1918 and translated into English in 1935, remains an interesting and informative biography of Karl Marx. The author – Franz Mehring – was a friend of Marx’s daughter (Laura), and had worked on publishing the correspondence between Marx and Engels. Mehring was active within the socialist movement, and familiar with the works of Marx. Moreover, he had ready access to many of the – then – unpublished manuscripts Marx had produced (such as the German Ideology). As a graduate, with a PhD from Leipzip University, Mehring was also a well educated man. Bringing all of this to bear, this book provides a detailed, almost intimate narrative on the life of Marx.This book was written prior to the Bolshevik Revolution (although published shortly thereafter), and is not hampered by dogma or doctrine associated with either Soviet propaganda or western anti-communism. It is, however, somewhat dated – as certain facts and details about Marx’s life have only come to light in more recent years. Nonetheless, it’s well written. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in Karl Marx.

⭐Outsanding biography by someone who was there. Read this before Ryzanov, McLellan etc. Brings out his humanity and shows the essential humanity of dialectical and historical materialism.
