Johnny Bianda is a man with a dream. He wants to own a boat off the coast of Florida and he only needs $186,000 to buy it. He steals the money from his firm, knowing that one day they’ll notice and one day they’ll kill him for it – after all, it is the Mafia.

User’s Reviews

James Hadley Chase was born in London and initially worked as a book wholesaler. He was heavily influenced by American crime and gangster writers and his own books fall within that genre, with many of them based in the U.S. Chase developed a number of series characters, with several books dedicated to each and all are fast moving tales of murder, intrigue, blackmail and espionage. Characters include ex commando Brick-Top Corrigan, Californian private eye Vic Malloy, former C.I.A. agent Mark Girland, and millionaire Don Miclem. Hailed as ” the thriller maestro of the generation “, Chase died in 1985 –This text refers to the paperback edition.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ I was very pleased to rediscover this book, some thirty or so years after I read it, thanks to the wonders of modern technology. I do miss the original lurid cover designs of lingerie clad lovelies though, despite their total irrelevance to the story within. The copy and paste Murder Room covers just don’t do this content justice and quite frankly I’m surprised they charge as much as they do for these e-book versions.JHC is a real guilty pleasure for lovers of hard-boiled fiction. I was around ten years of age when I first read ‘Knock Knock…’ and it was strong meat for a kid, to be sure. Given my impressionable state, this novel has lingered with me all these many years and re-reading it now as an adult I realise that it made an indelible imprint on my soul – good and bad – and its influence on my own work as a novelist is readily apparent.Given that I now can judge the book a lot more objectively, its faults and weak areas are much more obvious. But this is not high literature, nor does it pretend to be. If you take it for what it is – a fast, lurid morality tale, like a punchier Raymond Chandler with the bleak undercurrents of Jim Thompson – it is a highly entertaining read. What is really impressive about the work is just how brutal and unrelentingly dark it is. JHC does not pander to popular taste here and he stays true to the ‘noir’ character of the book right to the bitter end. It’s a tour de force of hard-boiled pulp writing, filled with unremittingly nasty characters and with a memorable pair of anti-heroes to ‘root’ for.My only gripe is that he didn’t make more of the suspense, he could have ratcheted it up to an almost unbearable level, Unfortunately having read it before I knew how it turned out, although I had forgotten the very end, which has lost none of its power to shock. Grab it for a fast read on a plane or over a weekend as it was meant to be enjoyed and you’ll be pleasantly surprised. But don’t blame me if it haunts you for years to come…

⭐ This is an action packed thriller with usual Chase twists and turns. Although the reach of Mafia is exaggerated and the violence is magnified the reader gets the usual kick !

⭐ Great as always!

⭐ I have found the plot enthralling. I have been so immersed in the characters’ psychology that I could not put down the book until I have finished reading it.

⭐ I was looking forward to reading my first book by James Hadley Chase (pen name of René Raymond), who’s described in the blurb as “the thriller maestro of the generation” (which generation? the lost generation?) and “the king of all thriller writers”. What a joke! This guy’s writing is banal, trite and predictable. His protagonist, an anti-hero of ever there was one, imagines he can rob the mob, then waltz up to a storage locker under surveillance by the bad guys to claim the cash. Chase “explains” things rather than let them happen naturally. Why say you’re funny? It’s much, much better to actually be funny. His dialog is even worse. His characters are American wise guys of Italian descent (how stereotypical!) and red necks but he has them calling the TV the “telly” and saying they want to “hire” a car instead of rent a car. Didn’t he know better how real Americans talk and what our slang is like? Sure he was British but a little trivial research would have enabled him to write more realistic dialog. You can almost hear the gears turning as he struggles to make his speakers sound “authentic”. Sadly I bought another of his books from Amazon as well, the “Fast Buck”, and I rather doubt I have the patience to read it. How did this guy sell books? He has 21 titles listed in the front of this House of Stratus edition and is said to have authored 90 books under various pen names. People must have been totally desperate for something to read, anything to read in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

⭐ If there is ever a writer to capture your mind, James is the Man. His Novels are like women, lusting for more. He is the best writer ever.

⭐ Finally, I found it. The first book of Chase I ever read. It was incomplete so I never finished it. I cant wait to read it again!!!

⭐ The book should have been titled WRITE,WRITE! WHO’S WRITE? THE ONE AND ONLY CHASE

⭐ This is an adventure into the world of the Mafia. Unfortunately, I never read or saw Mario Puzo’s Godfathers in binds or reels. Just didn’t enjoy the Mafia winning this game of wits. I wanted Bianda to outwit the gang so badly and that led to my disappointment. Slightly short of my expectation. Nonetheless, still a good read in the gangster paradise.

⭐ Gradually getting thro all of his books . Never a dull moment .GREAT
