Description
Piecing together the fascinating life and times of National Gallery of Victoria director and acclaimed artist L. Bernard Hall for the first time, this book uncovers Australian art’s most influential administrator and teacher—whose achievements have been virtually written out of history. Never as conservative as sometimes suggested, Hall came to Australia for the love of a woman and stayed for the love of a gallery, establishing a record of service unrivalled today. Based almost entirely on primary source material, this biography includes many of Hall’s own paintings and drawings along with striking archival photographs.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Whilst this is book is essential reading on Hall, the author has been badly let down by her publisher or designer. For some reason, it is in an ‘Easy Read, Large’ format, which I assume is intended for the partially sighted. Its exorbitant price, which will put off all but the most determined student, could surely have been reduced if the font size had been smaller and if the paragraphs had been properly indented. The font itself is hideous and the picture quality is poor. The index is worse than useless. It looks as though it was compiled before the final typesetting of the book and is frequently misleading. Hall himself would have been grieved by these errors and that his biography should have such a poor visual impact.
