Description

A killer is murdering Goths with relish – skinning and butchering them. The cops aren’t getting anywhere so Jack Nightingale’s nemesis, Superintendent Chalmers, asks him for help.

Nightingale discovers that the murdered Goths had one thing in common: a tattoo connected to the secretive Satanic child-sacrificing cult called the Order of Nine Angles.

As Nightingale closes in on the killers, the tables are turned and he finds himself in the firing line, along with his friends and family. The Order will stop at nothing to protect their secrets and Nightingale realises that there is nothing he can do to protect himself. Nor can he run, for the Order has connections across the world. It leaves him with only one way to stop the carnage – and that’s to take his own life . . .

⭐ Jack Nightingale is dead. LASTNIGHT opens in a morgue, where Chalmers is standing over a burnt crisp of a body that DNA evidence proves unequivocally is Jack’s. So as Stephen Leather promised when he released the last of the original Jack Nightingale Trilogy, he was done with the character. Convinced by his publishers to write a few more he (reluctantly?) agreed to two more, and then that was it (plus a short story or two). So here we are at the end.Two weeks earlier, Chalmers asks for Jack’s help (yes I know this is sort of like Peter Parker asking the Green Goblin for help on a science problem) on a case involving 5 dead Goths, murdered in an unusually grisly fashion with their flesh cut to ribbons and left to bleed out. Chalmers et al. are completely stumped and the higher-ups are screaming for some action, so he reluctantly turns to Jack because he “knows about that sort of thing”. The first 40% of the book is just good old Jack doing regular detective stuff, smoking lots of Marlboros and trying to get his MG to work and bumming rides off of Jenny when it doesn’t. There is little or none of the occult stuff that has marked all the other novels. As Jack gets closer to the truth, bit by bit by dint of good detective work, people close to him start dying in horrible fashion and we leave familiar London and enter the familiar twilight zone of Satanists, demons and universal payback that is Jack’s true existence since his father sold his soul to a devil before he was born. One absolutely MUST read the preceding 4 novels, because once the Satanism and demonology appears, there are references to key events in almost all the preceding novels. If you haven’t read them, your probably won’t even notice what you’re missing, but you might wonder who the heck Perry Smith is and how Nightingale got mixed up with him, and the same for some other key players. Same for references to Nightingale’s previous life as a cop. All are essential pieces of how he got to be where and what he is today. The novel rolls along at Stephen Leather’s usual brisk pace, there is witty banter between Jack and Jenny, his secretary (allegedly). Near the end of the novel, as the body count rises and Jack is forced in to making some really difficult choices, things speed up towards a breakneck conclusion. I have to admit that I pretty much figured out the ending about three quarters of the way through the novel, as you probably will too if you’ve been paying attention to for the first 4 and three quarter novels. Not the best of the 5 Jack Nightingale novels (I think 3-NIGHTMARE and 4-NIGHTSHADE were the best – 5 stars each), but a fine conclusion to a great series.Highly Recommended (but only AFTER reading entries 1-4 first).J.M. ⭐ I adored this series as a whole and I am so sad to be done with it. I don’t think I’m ready to be done with Mr. Nightingale’s humor and sarcasm. Nor do I know what to do with my new found love for tea. This book was a wonderful conclusion. I felt it did a great job resolving all the loose ends that Jack tends to leave about him. It leaves you with a feeling of wanting, but a good one. It has plenty of new turns, but a sense of familiarity as memories from previous books come creeping back in. It keeps your emotions tied to Jack’s all the way to the end. I loved it, though I was hesitant to continue the book after the first chapter. You’ll find out why when you read it for yourself.I would definitely recommend this series to those with a liking for supernatural or for crime novels in general. I’ve already gotten a couple friends and my mother hooked. The supernatural/occult elements are explained well enough that you can seriously know nothing (as Jack does) and learn along with him. It is well-written, with few errors here and there in the Kindle version of the books. Enjoy!

⭐ Jack gets pulled in again to the supernatural for The Met. Goths are being skinned. No real clues or evidence. Private Detective finds the reason but learns too late it is all intertwined. Jack loses Robbie and his Aunt and Uncle. He pulls in others from his previous life to try and survive. In the end he loses his identity. The character development and scenarios are great. The book is a page Turner. I would highly recommend. Unsure were Jack goes from here.

⭐ This latest in the Nightingale series of supernatural encounters with angels, demons, spirits, Satanism and more continues in the same way.Jack resourcefulness in dealing with it all is amazing. But it appears that he has finally run out of luck and that his very existence threatens the lives and souls of all those whom he holds dear.Actually, though, I have a sneaking suspicion that Proserpine actually likes Jack, and gives him some pointers when she can.Very well written, the ending of this story either puts a period to the series or is a great lead in to another one. However I’m not sure how much longer this theme can be continued without becoming “old”.

⭐ Stephen Leather does it again! I started the book yesterday and couldn’t stop until I’d reached the end.So easily drawn in by the latest Jack Nightingale thriller (and thriller it is).I can’t give it more than 5 stars but if you have read any of his other books this one will engage you just as readily. No need to have read the previous Nightingale books – they all stand alone. But my bet is if this is the first one you’ve read, you’ll quickly go to the others.Don’t miss this one!It makes me hungry for the next Leather book!Keep ’em coming Mr L.

⭐ LOVED this series! This is why I love the Kindle Unlimited. I find these new authors that I never would have purchased otherwise and find that I love them! It’s awesome because if it’s dull, I haven’t lost anything. But you can be sure that I’ll be buying anything else in this series, which I hope never ends!I read this entire series in about a week. So interesting, creepy, mysterious, and well written! As an American, I did have trouble with some of the British words, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as some other authors I’ve read. The Kindle was helpful probably 70% of the time in figuring out what the words meant.

⭐ I love this series and the main character is so adorable you’ll want him as your own boss. I have read all five of The Jack Nightingale books and will read them all again, they are that good. Can you change the course of life? Not I, but I’m not Jack. Take a ride with him in his “vintage” MGB, but don’t get too comfortable cause you’ll be on the move. You’ll fall in love with Jenny, too. I can almost guarantee it. Start at the beginning, it’s best read that way. Get to know the characters and enjoy all five of the series. I don’t think you’ll be sorry. Go ahead and take that ride!

⭐ READ this series in order — this will fill in all the strange happenings in this 5th book. Leather doesn’t waste a lot of time on background, but gives you enough to know what is happening.Jack Nightingale (aka Bird-Man) is a former cop, now private detective. The setting inLondon and the surrounding areas. The cops need Jack’s talent in dealing with the strange and unusual. Goths are being killed, their bodies cut up in a weird way. What is a “supernatural thriller?” This is a cross between X Files and the Twilight Zone – throw in devil worshippers and you have a scary, yet fun series.

⭐ Really enjoying the Jack Nightingale series by Stephen Leather. Well developed characters that thread in and out of the story lines. Mr. Leather is quite adept at keeping the reader enthralled and yet still guessing. Enjoying book 6 now but book 5 was really an outstanding effort. Highly recommended.

⭐ Great story Stephen! I didn’t care for the ending but the story was great. The series is certainly different from most stories dealing with the subject matter you present. Your imagination and characters are outstanding as is the fascinating plots you come up with. I highly recommend reading this book and series to everyone.
