Description

Now celebrating the 42nd anniversary of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, soon to be a Hulu original series! “Wild satire . . . The feckless protagonist, Arthur Dent, is reminiscent of Vonnegut heroes.”—Chicago TribuneThe unhappy inhabitants of planet Krikkit are sick of looking at the night sky above their heads—so they plan to destroy it. The universe, that is. Now only five individuals stand between the killer robots of Krikkit and their goal of total annihilation. They are Arthur Dent, a mild-mannered space and time traveler who tries to learn how to fly by throwing himself at the ground and missing; Ford Prefect, his best friend, who decides to go insane to see if he likes it; Slartibartfast, the indomitable vice president of the Campaign for Real Time, who travels in a ship powered by irrational behavior; Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed, three-armed ex-president of the galaxy; and Trillian, the sexy space cadet who is torn between a persistent Thunder God and a very depressed Beeblebrox. How will it all end? Will it end? Only this stalwart crew knows as they try to avert “universal” Armageddon and save life as we know it—and don’t know it!“Adams is one of those rare treasures: an author who, one senses, has as much fun writing as one has reading.”—Arizona Daily Star

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I really and truly love Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I recommend the books to almost everyone I know and I haven’t let anyone down so far. I will still certainly recommend the books in the series to just about anyone – but this one in particular was not quite as good as the first two in the series.I’m not sure what it was about this book that kept me from getting as into it as the first two. The plot was a bit more scattered for me which probably makes the main contribution to my slight disappointment. Not that the other Hitchhiker’s Guide books are not scattered – this one just had a different feel.I am curious to re-read the book though. When I started reading the book, I got through the first several chapters and my kindle wasn’t able to save the last read page. I went back through and re-read the chapters I had already read and it was way more hilarious than I had thought the first time around. I wouldn’t be surprised if I end up with a much better rating once I give it a second read.Anyway, I most certainly recommend the book – just read the first two books first. They certainly would give a much better introduction to the characters than this installment.

⭐This is my third hitchhiking trip, and although my thumb is getting sore, I have no choice but to keep on truckin’.Coming from the larger part of the world, where “krikkit” is a national obsession, I found this one particularly clever, even though the aficionados will shudder at the abuse of the hallowed ashes.Always willing to throw a stinging barb here and there, I also loved the immortal Wowbagger the Infinitely Prolonged, who is on a quest to personally insult every individual being in the Universe – in alphabetical order.Add in the flying lessons, the many-times-reincarnated Agrajag (not an Arthur Dent fan by any means), and of course my favorite robot Marvin, and you have an easy reading fun hike across the galaxy, with less of the sci-fi stuff, and more of the humor. There’s less Zaphod Beeblebrox than usual, but as he spends most of this story in a drunken stupor while Trillian flirts with the God of Thunder, we won’t bother him at this particular time.Sticking my sore thumb out now for the next adventure in hitchhiking – see you there!Amanda Richards, March 12, 2005

⭐Crazy, random, all over the place. Absolutely hilarious with plenty of the dives into little side bits about absolutely nothing it seems at the time, which then comes around later in some joking way with still no importance to the plot haha

⭐Not as funny as the first two books but there were still some highly satirical bits that got genuine out loud laughter from me. Sometimes the story was a bit hard to follow, but on second thought that seems to fit with the general absurdity of the entire tale. Will get the next book in the series.

⭐The first 3 are all good but this one is my personal favorite for reasons unknown, funniest maybe. I can’t recommend the last 2 though as they aren’t as funny or good in my opinion.

⭐This universe thing just gets warren more interesting as it goes along. This is a lovely little ditty about absolutely nothing I highly recommended.

⭐this book was advertised as a signed copy and it was, but the signature was a reproduction. this became obvious as the book was printed in England in 2005 and unforunatly Mr. Douglas Adams passed away in May of 2001. That being said, Tiffany (who works for the seller) went out of her way to make me happy with this order. I cannot state fully my apprection of the time and effort on her part to ensure my happiness. In my opinion, this is what makes a trully excellent company, because even the best of them will “enjoy the Opportunity” to have problems, only the best of them can make the customer feel as if there were no probem to begin with and be happy to do further buisness.

⭐A decent continuation of the adventures of one Arthur Dent. The book continues the series’ tradition of exploring the complexities, ironies, and absurdities of life, the universe and everything. Yet as the story continues, the reader is teased into wondering what deeper part Arthur is unknowingly playing in the universe that a few have hinted to him but no one will tell him.

⭐So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish: 4/5 (Hitchhikers Guide 4) by Douglas AdamsRating: 4 out of 5This is Book 4 of the Hitchhiker series but its very different to the first three. It features Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect and Marvin (briefly), I missed Trillian and Zaphod and obviously a whole lot more of Marvin. As always, it is a cleverly written book with typical Douglas Adams humour.I was disappointed by the overt focus on romance in this copy (reminded me of cheapish 70s sci-fi movies with better dialogues). I would have preferred more space action to boring earthly love scenes.

⭐After reading the first book I was looking forward to reading the second one but I found it very disappointing and thought that Douglas Adams had really lost the plot with the story line.

⭐A commentary on life as we know it; relevant to the ever increasing alienation of the individual in the technological age. With Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams rates with Dickens and Defoe as social commentator through allegory, with the genre of science-fiction taken to its logical conclusion in ultimate absurdity. Recommendeed bedtime reading for every adult and child over the age of seven. All five books in the trilogy in five stages develop a theme both comic and tragic, and exceptionally well observed human nature.

⭐Read a few times. The more I read the stores, the more I think Adams was a genius. If you think about work and every day situations, the quirky aliens remind more of real life people I’ve meet ( bankers, politicians, and other people who don’t seem to be in touch with real life and reality ).

⭐Is a continuation of Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, so I will be playing it regularly
