Description
This advanced textbook on linear algebra and geometry covers a wide range of classical and modern topics. Differing from existing textbooks in approach, the work illustrates the many-sided applications and connections of linear algebra with functional analysis, quantum mechanics and algebraic and differential geometry. The subjects covered in some detail include normed linear spaces, functions of linear operators, the basic structures of quantum mechanics and an introduction to linear programming. Also discussed are Kahler’s metic, the theory of Hilbert polynomials, and projective and affine geometries. Unusual in its extensive use of applications in physics to clarify each topic, this comprehensice volume should be of particular interest to advanced undergraduates and graduates in mathematics and physics, and to lecturers in linear and multilinear algebra, linear programming and quantum mechanics.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This is a horrible format. The copy is so bad that I cannot even read it on my Kindle Fire. It is barely legible on my laptop at 200% resolution. One cannot tell the difference between an apostrophe, lower case l or the number 1 on my laptop, for instance. I will be filing a complaint with Amazon and expect to get my money back.
⭐This book is wonderful and although it can be very advanced, once you get used to the writing style, it can be absolutely captivating. I believe that this would be a valuable edition to any mathematical library, public or private, and I know that I myself have this as one of my favorites. Completely wonderful!
⭐There are three linear linear algebra textbooks which must be studied cover to cover by any serious student of mathematics and theoretical physics. This book is one of the three. The other two books are “Finite-Dimensional Vector Spaces” by Paul Halmos which should be read first and the last one is Linear Algebra and Its Applications by Peter Lax which should be read after Kostrikin-Manin’s book. The book is lucidly written and well motivated by the very sources of subjects. Nowhere is this motivation better than in the chapter 2 “Geometry of Spaces with Inner Products” which uses Quantum Mechanics to motivate study of Unitary spaces and theory of Self-Adjoint operators, the very reason the whole machinery was developed by Hilber, John von Neumann, and the followers. If I could wish for one thing in this book that would be to have more problems but since in Russian mathematical tradition the book of problems are published separately this is to be expected. If you are looking for a numerical methods in linear algebra this review is irrelevant for you. Please check out the Lloyd’s ”Numerical Linear Algebra”.
⭐Note: the book is worth 5 stars! Amazon however and/or the publisher deserves 0. THIS BOOK IS A REPRINT! A cheap, digitalised printing of the original version. And 70 pounds for that! Amazon, I can buy a printer and paper and print a PDF of the book myself. Shame on you!P.S.: out of bad luck, the book also came with a crumbled page…
⭐This “used” version is same as new, no markings anywhere and pages are fresh and clean. Surprised by the quality of this book.
⭐Qro cancalar a compra, me passou despercebido q é e-book.Eu preciso do livro fisico.
