It emphasizes constrained optimization, beginning with a substantial treatment of linear programming and then proceeding to convex analysis, network flows, integer programming, quadratic programming, and convex optimization. Readers will discover a host of practical business applications as well as non-business applications.Topics are clearly developed with many numerical examples worked out in detail. Specific examples and concrete algorithms precede more abstract topics. With its focus on solving practical problems, the book features free C programs to implement the major algorithms covered, including the two-phase simplex method, primal-dual simplex method, path-following interior-point method, and homogeneous self-dual methods. In addition, the author provides online JAVA applets that illustrate various pivot rules and variants of the simplex method, both for linear programming and for network flows. These C programs and JAVA tools can be found on the book’s website. The website also includes new online instructional tools and exercises.

⭐I admit that all the LP material is in this book, but given the state of the art in text book layout and design (color, graphs, coordination with online tools), this book is from the 1980s. I’m using it in conjunction with a Coursera class on “Linear and Integer Programming”, but I can’t believe this is the best text book for that course. I guess I’ve seen so many other “modern” text books that have larger print, more illustrations, more graphics, more use of color and creative layout, more example real-world problems…that it makes this book look like it’s an academic work, but minimally effective in teaching the topic to new students.The book is very helpful and optimization problems are very useful for many field. The quality of the book is good. The package for the book is not very good.For students with a diversified background, this book is the best. It postpones the use of matrix notation. With this design I can make arrangement to let students make up their linear algebra in the first month. Another benefit (of using it as a textbook) is that the author has his slides available online.A bit different than what I’d seen in other presentations on Linear Programming (e.g., use of dictionaries to introduce the simplex method) but very well written and clear presentation of ideas.
